Position: Fire & Life Safety Technician

Overview

Join the Institutional Risk and Safety Programs department as a Fire & Life Safety Technician and take an active role in keeping our campus safe! In this position, you will perform ongoing and preventive maintenance to ensure the proper operation of a wide range of fire protection systems and equipment, including fire sprinklers, standpipe systems, fire pumps, kitchen hood systems, special hazard systems, fire extinguishers, and fire alarm systems.

You will collaborate closely with the Fire & Life Safety team to support annual certifications, inspections, fire drills, fire safety audits, and training programs, as well as assist with related administrative responsibilities.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others are essential. This role provides the opportunity to build meaningful professional relationships across campus with faculty, staff, students, and University support personnel while actively promoting a strong culture of safety.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma; three to five years related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will be considered; computer skills for reports and presentations.

Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Associate degree in fire protection technology, fire science, or a related field.
  • NICET Fire Alarm Systems and Water-Based Systems certification, Level 2 or higher.
  • Texas FAL, FEL, and RME-I licenses.
  • Certification in Simplex fire alarm systems.
  • Incident Management Training, including IC-100, IC-200, IC-700, and IC-800.
Other Qualifications

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform ongoing preventive maintenance on Fire/Life Safety equipment and mechanical, electrical, and other building systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure compliance with building codes and safety regulations; coordinate with external contractors for more complex issues as needed.
  • Maintain a preventive maintenance schedule for all building systems and equipment to minimize breakdowns and extend asset lifespans.
  • Identify causes of system failures, determine appropriate corrective actions, and implement solutions promptly to mitigate system disruptions.
  • Utilize, track, prioritize, and complete maintenance requests from staff in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Review recommended maintenance procedures to ensure best practices are implemented and properly documented.
  • Monitor building systems and respond to alarms as required.
  • Assist with inspections and maintenance of fire extinguishers; replace and/or install missing or discharged fire extinguishers and related equipment.
  • Assist in the management of inventory and maintenance of life safety equipment, including but not limited to fire extinguishers and fire alarm equipment, and maintain accurate records.
  • Support outreach and educational programs for students, faculty, and staff to promote awareness and best practices in fire safety and prevention.
  • Respond promptly to potentially critical situations by conducting rapid and accurate situational assessments and troubleshooting system components.
  • Assist with the University’s fire evacuation drill program.
  • Assist with the installation, modification, and repair of building equipment and systems.
  • Be available during campus disasters or hazardous material release incidents to serve, based on expertise, in an appropriate emergency response or designated departmental role.
  • Work with appropriate vendors to conduct regular inspections of university safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems, and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Enter fire system testing documentation into the fire system database.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels and storage of new and used fire system equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Must be capable of lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand or walk for 2–4 hours at a time and sit for up to 2 hours at a time.
  • Frequently use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, or pulling.
  • Occasionally squat, kneel, bend, lie down, crawl, knee-stand, or push/pull with forces up to 75 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions.
  • Must have the ability to work at heights, maintain full range of motion, demonstrate physical agility, and maintain balance.
  • Ability to work safely around electrically charged and/or rotating machinery.
