Project Overview

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a safe form for disposal. The goal is to protect the Columbia River and surrounding communities, salmon, and wildlife.

Job Summary

In this role you will follow procedures and work with mentors to develop standard engineering deliverables such as calculations, piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs), and material requisitions. You will meet with your lead to discuss approach, process, schedule, and expectations. As you gain experience, you will take on tasks with greater responsibility and less oversight. Your knowledge and abilities applied through mechanical engineering techniques will enable you to make impactful contributions.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), technical reports, studies, design documentation, calculations using engineering software, and specifications for complex mechanical equipment.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines in the development of the design.
  • Apply knowledge of industry, regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
  • Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget and schedule.
  • Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day‑to‑day activities.
  • Participate in the design, development, modification, and evaluation of mechanical components and processes using Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Compile, adjust, and correlate data to develop professional knowledge and skills.
  • Provide input to and maintain technical logs and records.
  • Coordinate work and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Assist other disciplines with mechanical matters.
  • Help develop and present material as requested.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Provide technical assistance to other mechanical personnel and interact with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agencies.
  • Assist project and construction management in identifying and complying with project mechanical requirements and addressing issues during execution.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Level I – Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution and at least 1 year of relevant professional work experience, or 5 years of experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Level II – Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering and at least 2 years of relevant professional work experience, or 6 years of experience in lieu of a degree.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship.
  • Able to complete pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if on‑site), and background check.
  • Must obtain a Department of Energy badge for Hanford Site access; teleworkers must still meet security requirements.
  • Non‑U.S. citizens from high‑risk countries subject to additional security requirements.
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Preferred experience in fluid system design in DOE or DOD facilities.
  • Preferred EIT or PE license in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering.
