Project Overview

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a safe form for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the surrounding communities, salmon, and wildlife throughout the Northwest.

Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year‑round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50‑mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three‑hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Job Summary

Originate and check structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, and material requisitions. Review and coordinate technical documents with other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction. Prepare technical reports related to specific design issues. Participate in technical meetings and perform intra‑discipline coordination.

Part‑Time Telework:
This role is full‑time, offering part‑time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full‑time presence in the Richland project office, then may offer part‑time telework flexibility. The schedule is 9/80, offering every other Friday off.

Major Responsibilities
  • Participate in the design, development, modification, and evaluation of civil/structural components and processes.
  • Prepare or participate in the preparation of construction drawings, project schedules, graphic presentations, civil drawings, steel and concrete calculations, and material requisitions.
  • Check manufacturers’ drawings and data for compliance with specification and design drawings.
  • Provide input to and/or maintain technical logs and records.
  • Coordinate work and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Coordinate development and presentation of material when requested.
  • Assist in constructability reviews.
  • Plan civil/structural layout, and prepare detailed civil/structural design and layout drawings for small structures, portions of major buildings, roadways, railroads, etc.
  • Determine the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements.
  • Prepare building material interface details for review by senior personnel.
  • Participate in reviews and recommend approval of design drawings and data for compliance with requirements.
  • Prepare civil/structural designs and construction drawings using 2‑D/3‑D computer‑aided design (CAD), presentation graphics and civil models and codes.
  • Prepare procurement and subcontract requisition documents and perform associated technical bid evaluations with award recommendations.
Level I
  • Bachelor’s in Structural/Civil Engineering from an accredited university or college with 1–2 years of experience or 5–6 years of relevant work experience.
Level II
  • Bachelor’s in Structural/Civil Engineering from an accredited university or college and 2–5 years of relevant experience or 6–9 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still comply with security requirements to obtain a badge.)
