Project OverviewWe are designing and building the Hanford Vit Plant— a one‑of‑a‑kind facility that will certify radioactive and chemical waste from historical plutonium production for safe disposal. The project protects the nearby Columbia River and surrounding communities, salmon, and wildlife across the Northwest. Located at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers, the site offers outdoor recreation, wineries, and proximity to Seattle and Portland.
Job SummaryAs a member of the Mechanical Handling team, you will specify requirements for material handling equipment, treatment, and vitrification systems and support utilities. You will lead the design, development, modification, evaluation, and resolution of mechanical components and processes, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety requirements and project objectives.
Telework FlexibilityThis full‑time role offers part‑time telework flexibility at the Richland, Washington project office. After initial hiring and onboarding, the position will require full‑time presence, subsequently allowing part‑time telework on a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. The telework designation may change at the company's discretion, requiring at least three days of in‑person attendance per week.
Major Responsibilities- Plan and conduct independent mechanical work, applying judgment to evaluate, select, and adapt mechanical engineering techniques on medium‑size projects.
- Lead the design, development, modification, and evaluation of mechanical components and processes using Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs). Coordinate and interface as directed.
- Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget and schedule, supporting PEM/PE/EGS in creating aligned project schedules.
- Support and implement Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day‑to‑day work activities.
- Communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to upper management, supporting preparation of estimates, staffing needs, and schedules.
- Prepare or oversee discipline estimates and work plans per project scope, schedule, and budget, and support performance reporting.
- Mentor mechanical engineering personnel through on‑the‑job training for professional development.
- Support procurement of equipment by developing procurement packages, reviewing quotations, evaluating vendor submittals, and resolving technical issues during procurement.
- Collaboratively resolve design challenges with all team members.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or international equivalent) and 8‑10 years of relevant professional experience or 12‑14 years of related work experience.
Required Knowledge And Skills- Authorized to work and remain in the U.S. without Bechtel visa sponsorship currently or in the future.
- Capable of passing a pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if on site), and background check, including verification of employment and education.
- Must obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site; teleworkers must still comply with security requirements.
- Non‑U.S. citizens from certain countries may face additional security requirements limiting site access.
- Proficient in current engineering design applications, with knowledge of CAD (2‑D and 3‑D).
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
