Project Overview

Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, is designing and building a facility that will safely dispose of radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production. The project protects the nearby Columbia River, surrounding communities, salmon, and wildlife.

Job Summary

As a Mechanical System Engineer, you will ensure that utility and process systems are designed to required codes, standards, and design criteria. You will develop design basis documents such as calculations, drawings, reports, specifications, and material requisitions. Your leadership will guide junior engineers and deliver innovative solutions to technical challenges while meeting schedule and budget targets.

Position is full‑time with part‑time telework flexibility (9/80 schedule). Requires initial full‑time presence at the Richland, Washington project office.

Major Responsibilities
  • Design fluid and gas systems in WTP process facilities.
  • Execute discipline work processes in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.
  • Prepare P&IDs, technical reports, studies, design documentation, calculations, and specifications for complex mechanical equipment.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the client in the design development.
  • Mentor junior engineers.
  • Coordinate closely with technical disciplines in integrated planning and execution.
  • Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget and schedule.
  • Support and implement Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day‑to‑day activities.
Education and Experience Requirements Level I

BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 5–8 years of relevant professional work experience. Alternatively, 9–12 years of relevant experience without the degree is acceptable.

Level II

BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 8–10 years of relevant professional work experience, or 12–14 years of experience without the degree.

Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship.
  • Must complete pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check.
  • Must obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site; teleworkers must comply with security requirements.
  • Non‑U.S. citizens from certain countries are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, calculations, and software application.
  • Experience with nuclear quality assurance programs such as ASME‑NQA‑1, MIL‑Q‑9858A, or ISO‑9000.
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with hydraulics, equipment sizing, and overall system design for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.
  • Preferred: experience in fluid system design in processing facilities, DOE facilities, or DOD facilities.
