Role SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Collections and Loss Mitigation Manager/Team Leader, the Recovery Specialist is responsible for interacting with members, team members and third‑party agencies to resolve charged‑off accounts. The role includes account research, payment structuring, posting payments, general account updating and providing management with trend analysis and issue updates. The specialist also supports frontline staff and improves procedures within the Temenos Recovery Module.
WhatYou Will Be Doing
- Perform all responsibilities in accordance with Gesa’s security and member privacy policies.
- Provide professional, accurate assistance and support to team members and membership.
- Contact members via outbound/inbound calls and other means of communication to negotiate resolution and accurately document actions within the collection systems, while maintaining performance and productivity standards.
- Support other recovery work queues to facilitate teamwork in the department.
- Escalate calls to lead or senior team members and management as needed.
- Maximize the collection and/or recovery of Credit Union assets from delinquent and charged‑off accounts.
- Assign accounts, communicate and liaison with third‑party collection vendors.
- Work closely with internal and external legal counsel on accounts selected for potential litigation.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all collection and recovery activity.
- Adhere to provisions of the Gesa Collections Policy and all relevant regulations.
- Ensure bankruptcy documentation and communication are referred to the Bankruptcy Specialist in a timely manner.
- Understand and perform Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) functions, as applicable.
- Attend credit union training sessions, conferences or seminars as approved by supervisor.
- Follow up on accounts in a timely manner according to current procedures.
- Analyze the financial situation of delinquent borrowers; recommend repossession of collateral when other arrangements fail.
- Stay up to date on trends in loan underwriting and other pertinent areas impacting collections.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and respond simultaneously to multiple tasks and requests.
- Ability to promote a team environment and participate in a cohesive team setting.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Professional interaction with members and coworkers at all times.
- Ability to apply policies and procedures when making decisions.
- Three to five years of similar or related experience; third‑party collection experience preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Travel required for credit union training and/or job duties.
- Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
- Display courtesy, tact and diplomacy with members, peers and staff.
- Proficiency with standard office equipment:
Excel, MS Word and Outlook.
