Overview

On behalf of our public sector client, Affinity is seeking a Business Engineer to bridge business and technology by engaging stakeholders and users to understand workflows, needs, and goals. The role translates these insights into clear requirements, user stories, and prioritized backlogs that guide product development, ensuring alignment with business outcomes through continuous validation and stakeholder collaboration.

Responsibilities
  • Engage closely with business users and stakeholders to understand their workflows, pain points, and objectives; translate these insights into clear product requirements and workflow documentation to drive continuous product improvement.
  • Elicit, analyze, document, and maintain business requirements, current and future-state workflows, user stories, acceptance criteria, UX artifacts, product backlog, and related traceability documentation to support end-to-end product delivery.
  • Model and document current and future state workflows, ensuring shared understanding across business and technical teams and identifying opportunities for optimization.
  • Continuously validate requirements and solutions with stakeholders to ensure alignment with desired business outcomes and user value.
  • Own and maintain the product backlog, including prioritization, refinement, and ensuring readiness for sprint planning.
  • Clarify requirements and resolve open questions before and during iteration planning by updating artifacts and maintaining traceability of changes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (developers, QA, UX, Dev Ops, Scrum Master) to co-create solutions and remove impediments impacting delivery.
  • Apply Agile and Scrum principles to support iterative delivery, continuous feedback, and ongoing process improvement.
  • Leverage user research and design thinking methodologies to deeply understand user needs and align product direction with business goals.
  • Create and maintain UX artifacts such as personas, journey maps, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and mockups to guide development and enhance user experience.
  • Oversee end-to-end design execution, from concept through to final handoff, ensuring usability and consistency.
  • Ensure quality and traceability of requirements throughout the development lifecycle, supporting Dev Ops and QA practices.
  • Contribute to and support Dev Ops practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and test-driven development.
  • Participate in backlog estimation and planning, leveraging knowledge of team capacity and velocity to guide realistic commitments.
  • Actively participate in Agile ceremonies, including backlog grooming, sprint planning, daily scrums, and retrospectives.
  • Provide training and ongoing support to business users, including ad hoc guidance and knowledge sharing.
  • Facilitate cross-training and mentor team members, fostering collaboration and shared ownership of outcomes.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities across processes, tools, and team collaboration.
  • Contribute to organizational standards and architecture, supporting the evolution of Dev Ops and product practices.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and key contributor within the broader engineering and product community.
  • Provide strategic and tactical feedback to enhance the overall platform and product ecosystem.
Qualifications
  • University degree in Computer Science or Business Administration or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
  • 8+ years working experience as a Business Analyst, which includes 3 years direct hands‑on experience in the agile practice.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Preferred Product Owner certification such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO), SAFe Product Manager/Owner (PMPO), or similar.
  • Able to comply with Employee and Contractor Mandatory Vaccine Policy.
