HVAC Technician

Job Summary

The Richmond School District is currently seeking a full‑time HVAC Technician. This position provides Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Piping services at a journeyperson level to ensure a safe and healthy environment and air quality for students, staff, and other building users. The incumbent installs upgrades, services, repairs, and tests heating and ventilating systems throughout the District to ensure efficient operation.

Work is performed independently but may receive instructions and guidance from the HVAC Technician "A" license when doing Class A gas fitting work.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, upgrades, services, repairs, and tests heating, ventilating, and refrigeration components, equipment, and systems such as hot water, warm air, natural gas, propane, compressed air, pneumatic, and Digital Control to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Responds to HVAC and piping emergencies throughout District facilities, such as gas leaks, leaking or burst pipes, and lack of heat.
  • Troubleshoots technical problems with HVAC piping systems and balances HVAC systems.
  • Provides technical advice and information to District managers, administrators, tradespeople, and outside contractors in the HVAC and piping trade. Provides direction to temporary employees and outside contractors.
  • Maintains familiarity with standards, codes, and by‑laws regulating the HVAC trade, including current knowledge of technological, procedural, and regulatory developments.
  • Reads and interprets plans, drawings, and specifications of District facilities for the layout of HVAC and piping system upgrades and repairs. Develops manual plans, sketches, and drawings for job layouts, permit applications, and estimating time and materials required to complete the work.
  • Completes written records related to work performed.
  • Performs duties in compliance with District and Government health and safety procedures and regulations that relate to the work performed to minimize potential for accidents, injuries, or hazards.
  • Operates and maintains a District vehicle, including inspecting the vehicle for safe operation, reporting any defects to the supervisor, keeping it clean, and adding operating fluids as required.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or equivalent plus a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Apprenticeship and a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Qualification in one or more of the Piping Trades as established by the needs of the department:
    Plumbing, Steam Fitting/Pipe Fitting, or Refrigeration.
  • Two (2) years experience at a journeyperson level in commercial and institutional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning service work including maintenance, repair, and installation of commercial and industrial equipment.
  • Class “B” gas license with electrical endorsement.
  • Thorough knowledge of current techniques, methods, procedures, and equipment applicable to the HVAC trade.
  • Working knowledge of computerized software and equipment applicable to the HVAC trade.
  • Ability to organize workload, work under periodic pressure, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving heavy materials, equipment, and supplies and working in confined spaces.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
  • Competency in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the trade.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
