The Mechanical Estimator will report to the Senior Mechanical Estimator and is responsible for preparing cost estimates and bid documents for a variety of Mechanical construction projects. The Estimator works with suppliers, clients, pursuits team, and Senior Management to provide accurate detailed estimates in a timely fashion. This individual will represent Symtech in a professional capacity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIE
  • Review tender documents (instructions, RFQs, bonding, insurance, specifications, schedules) to ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Lead bid process and closing with minimal supervision.
  • Opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting pursuits in design assist projects.
  • Analyze conceptual designs, project specifications, tender drawings, and related design documents.
  • Identify design gaps and issue RFIs for ambiguous items in tender documents.
  • Conduct pre-bid risk evaluations covering scope, benefits, competition, and cost factors.
  • Develop installation strategies to support competitive, winning bids.
  • Suggest value engineering options to improve cost-effectiveness and optimize solutions.
  • Create detailed take-offs, assign items, and organize quantities using Trimble Autobid.
  • Calculate material costs, labor hours, job expenses, and required equipment.
  • Set up tender-specific breakout pricing and determine submission format requirements.
  • Update and manage the estimating database to keep project estimates sharp and competitive.
  • Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes for compliance; select and recommend suitable vendors.
  • Prepare lead letters for scope clarification and qualifications.
  • Assist with overall cost strategy from early planning stages to final construction.
  • Evaluate current workflows and contribute to strategic development initiatives to enhance estimating processes and competitive positioning.
  • Effectively manage time to produce thorough and timely estimates.
  • Present and explain estimates to internal teams.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders across departments and teams as needed.
  • Maintain strong relationships with sub-trades, suppliers, manufacturers, and consultants.
  • Represent the company positively during site walkthroughs, design meetings, and client reviews.
  • Collaborate with Electrical and technology teams through design and estimates.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior team members to support skill development and team growth.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
  • A combination of training, education and relevant work experience could be considered equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience estimating mechanical ICI construction projects.
  • A high level of expertise working with the Trimble Autobids is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of working with Accubid Livecount would be an added asset.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration piping takeoff would be an added asset.
  • Strong Capability of planning, managing time and stress of multiple ongoing tenders.
  • Proficient in using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.);
  • Must be tactful, have a professional demeanor, and the ability to interact effectively with managers, employees, suppliers and contractors.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under time constraints and working effectively as a team player in a professional office environment.
  • Capable of estimating a variety of project types and contributing to group efforts through effective coordination and collaboration.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints, construction drawings, and engineering specifications.
  • Strong administration and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of procurement techniques, procedures, policies and accounting.
