Overview and Purpose of the Role

Reporting to the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging, the Radiology Technologist is responsible for safely performing diagnostic imaging examinations utilizing ionizing radiation. This role requires strong clinical judgment to operate imaging equipment effectively while ensuring patient safety, patient comfort, and the production of high-quality diagnostic images.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostic imaging procedures using ionizing radiation, ensuring accurate positioning, patient safety, and high-quality diagnostic images
  • Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures, answering questions, obtaining relevant medical history, confirming exam preparation, and obtaining consent as required
  • Order and perform imaging procedures in accordance with department protocols, the ALARA principle, and relevant patient history
  • Assess imaging requests for accuracy and appropriateness based on medical indications and clinical history
  • Confirm informed consent prior to image acquisition and advocate for patients when consent is unclear or in question
  • Select appropriate equipment settings and make required technical adjustments based on patient condition and exam requirements
  • Determine and obtain the appropriate imaging views in alignment with department protocols and physician orders
  • Modify examinations using professional judgment to support accurate diagnosis and enhance clinical information for physicians
  • Apply post-surgical protocols and considerations that may limit patient range of motion, including care for patients with hip or knee replacements
  • Ensure radiation safety by protecting patients and staff through appropriate use of shielding, time, and distance
  • Maintain accurate patient records, including tracking exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and ensuring images are available in the PACS system
  • Prepare imaging and non-imaging equipment for examinations, including warm-up and calibration activities
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and accountability for examinations performed by students, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and governing body requirements
  • Educate patients and staff on X-ray safety, proper use and cleaning of protective equipment, and appropriate use of barriers
  • Perform life-saving interventions (e.g., CPR, first aid) as required
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned

Corporate Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines

Skills &

Qualifications:

  • Registration and in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) is required
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of related experience in Radiology
  • Experience with fluoroscopy procedures is preferred (e.g., OR, GI studies, injection procedures)
  • Current CPR Certification (BLS) is required; ACLS is considered an asset
  • Advanced training in cross-sectional anatomy is considered an asset
  • Ability to apply and adhere to principles of aseptic technique
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting diagnostic imaging equipment, as well as PACS and RIS systems
  • Strong patient care skills, with the ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, structured documentation
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage workflow, and meet deadlines independently
  • Proven problem-solving and analytical skills, with experience resolving moderately complex operational or technical issues
