Overview and Purpose of the Role

Reporting directly to the Manager of the Operating Room and PACU, the OR Team Leader for Orthopedics is a visible clinical leader, providing guidance, support, and expertise to nurses and the interdisciplinary team. This role drives safe, efficient, and exceptional patient care in the Orthopedic Operating Rooms while fostering teamwork, accountability, and a culture of excellence.
Key
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform clinical oversight by acting as an expert resource for nursing and allied staff, addressing urgent care issues, supporting complex decision‑making, and responding to clinical concerns.
- Monitor workload distribution and staffing levels; adjust assignments and elevate shortages or concerns to leadership as necessary to ensure safe and efficient care.
- In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Educator and other multi‑disciplinary team members as appropriate, participate in staff development activities such as conducting need assessments of individual nurses and/or unit, coordinating the introduction of new skills/procedures (in collaboration with internal specialists), supporting autonomous nursing practice and arranging nursing in‑service sessions/orientations as required.
- Participate in the orientation of new staff by providing support to preceptors and mentors and monitoring/evaluating the progress of new staff. Communicate staff performance information to the Manager.
- Collaborate with other departments including Lab, Peri‑Operative services, Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmacy, and Virtual Care to streamline care coordination and service delivery.
- Inspect and maintain readiness of equipment and clinical environments by checking crash carts, supply carts, and ensuring infection control and safety compliance.
- Responsible for identifying efficiency and effectiveness of existing supplies, equipment and technology. Identify gaps in resources and maintain current knowledge of supplies, equipment and technology available both internally and externally to the organization.
- Coordinate and participate in quality improvement and risk management activities for assigned areas.
- Follow up on incident reports and assist to identify and monitor trends and report on findings.
- Evaluate effect of changes in nursing practice; generate recommendations for alternative approaches to nursing/processing practice and recommend changes to selected practices, procedures or protocols.
- Conduct safety audits and take corrective action as needed.
- Manage workload effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Participate in project teams or hospital committees as required.
- Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
Corporate Responsibilities:
- Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company policies and procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.
Education, Skills &
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an approved Baccalaureate Nursing Program.
- Current Registered Nurse registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Two years recent operating room experience required.
- Operating Room Leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and competence in orthopaedic surgeries including total joint replacement.
- Expertise in orthopaedic instrumentation and special equipment including robotics.
- Knowledge of ORNAC standards of practice.
- Current BCLS certification.
- Demonstrated good organizational and problem solving skills in stressful situations.
- Demonstrated good interpersonal skills with an ability to work well with a variety of staff, patients and visitors.
