Estimated Annual Salary of $58,064 to $61,715 (based on qualifications & inclusive of 121 scheduled 24.25 hour shifts per year plus 13 paid holidays annually). The actual annual salary earned may vary based on factors such as accrued holidays (prorated during year of hire), paid or unpaid leave, and any additional extra shifts worked.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the supervision of firefighting crews assigned to a shift.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
  • Each employee must complete the requirements as set forth by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council as a Georgia Certified Firefighter. (Required)
  • Georgia State F Class Driver's License (Preferred, subject to Fire Chief review for external applicants)
  • NPQ Firefighter II (Required)
  • NPQ Fire Officer I (within 12 months)
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management Systems 100, 200, 700, and 800 (Required)
  • Preferred State of Georgia EMT (Preferred, subject to Fire Chief review for external applicants)
  • Minimum of 3 years paid experience in a career department. (Required)
  • Minimum of 18 months paid experience at Richmond Hill Fire Department (Preferred, subject to Fire Chief review for external applicants)
Major Duties
  • Supervises firefighting personnel and activities of an assigned station during an assigned shift; assume command responsibilities at fire suppression, emergency medical and rescue incidents until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Responds to fire alarms, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, rescue calls, and other emergencies as a supervisor of a fire and rescue team.
  • Participates in identifying opportunities for improving fire suppression methods and procedures; identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff implement improvements.
  • Assigns work activities and projects as needed including but not limited to equipment maintenance, hydrant maintenance, uniform and PPE supplies, fire hose maintenance, hydrant maintenance and testing, and pre-incident planning.
  • Assumes command of fire suppression efforts in the absence of the superior officers including directing fire streams to protect exposures; drive and operate various equipment and apparatus as needed; confine and extinguish fire incorporating proper fire and safety procedures at all times.
  • Coordinates and participates in the maintenance of building, station grounds, equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist with the planning and conducts fire safety programs for schools, church, and civic organizations and other community groups.
  • Assists in training, motivating and evaluating assigned personnel; work with subordinate personnel to correct deficiencies.
  • Performs fire suppression, rescue, and First Responder duties in response to emergency calls.
  • Manages, reviews, and verifies accuracy of all records, incident reports and correspondence to the Fire Chief.
  • May be required to perform as a Hazmat Technician
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required By The Position
  • Knowledge of CPR and First Aid.
  • Knowledge of street, building, water system and physical layout of the City.
  • Knowledge of all fire suppression and equipment and its placement on vehicles.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques, policies, procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of incident command procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and management principles and practices.
  • Skill in performing many and varied firefighting techniques and procedures.
  • Skill in reacting quickly and calmly while under pressure.
  • Skill in driving and operating fire vehicles, fire suppression equipment, medical equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
