Police Officer – Patrol Division

City of Richmond Hill, Georgia – 120 Richard Davis Drive, Richmond Hill, GA 31324, USA

Schedule: Full Time (Avg. 42+ hours per week) –
FLSA: Non‑Exempt/ Hourly

Pay Range: $25.00/hr – $26.00/hr

  • Pay Grade 15 (Certified Hiring Range): $24.58/hr to $25.60/hr
  • Pay Grade 14 (Non‑Certified Recruit): Trainees start at $23.30/hr
Job Summary

This position performs police work involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws, and investigation of crime.

Major Duties
  • Answer calls relayed by a dispatcher, including domestic disputes, burglaries, suspicious characters, traffic accidents, etc.
  • Patrol assigned geographic area to monitor businesses, residences, and public areas.
  • Write reports and complete forms, including incident and accident reports.
  • Apprehend and cite traffic law violators; direct traffic in congested areas as needed.
  • Provide first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Execute search and arrest warrants.
  • Testify in judicial proceedings when necessary.
  • Assist other departmental units and law‑enforcement agencies as requested.
  • Secure and preserve crime scenes and fatal traffic accidents until support units arrive.
  • Perform public service duties such as assisting lost motorists, entering locked cars, and providing transportation to citizens in need.
  • Arrest and process persons arrested.
  • Inspect weapons and patrol car; monitor vehicle maintenance.
  • Assist with local school functions.
  • Provide courtroom security.
  • Participate in special duty assignments.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of specialized training in policing or equivalent experience.
  • Basic skills associated with a high school education.
  • Relevant experience of one to two years in a similar role.
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the vehicle operated.
  • Ability to meet Peace Officer Standards and Training Council requirements for Georgia.
Knowledge Required
  • Knowledge of city geography and road systems.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Skill in safe motor vehicle operation during routine patrols and emergencies.
  • Skill in first aid and CPR applications.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in use of firearms and other weapons, and in applying physical force when necessary.
  • Skill in observing and recalling details accurately.
  • Skill in operating computers and other electronic devices.
  • Skill in multi‑tasking and rapid judgment calls.
  • Skill in problem solving.
Supervisory Controls

The Sergeant or Corporal assigns work with general instructions; the supervisor spot‑checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Department policies and procedures, along with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, provide the guidelines. These are generally clear and specific but may require interpretation in application.

  • The work involves varied duties related to enforcement of laws and potentially dangerous, life‑threatening situations contributing to complexity.
  • The purpose is to participate in law enforcement activities; successful performance contributes to department efficiency.

  • Typical contacts include co‑workers, representatives of other departments, the general public, school personnel, students, victims, witnesses, offenders, and federal, state, and local law‑enforcement and judicial agencies.
  • Interactions are generally to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • Work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
  • Requires frequent lifting of light and heavy objects, running short distances, and use of tools or equipment demanding dexterity.
  • Work occurs in offices, patrol cars, and outdoors; exposure to noise, machinery, and inclement weather possible.
  • Use of specialized law‑enforcement equipment required.
