Operating in a highly regulated environment, the company is entering a critical growth phase and preparing for a potential initial public offering. We are seeking a VP of Finance to lead and scale the finance and accounting organization, owning financial operations, reporting, controls, and planning across the business. This role is suited for a finance executive who combines strong technical depth with hands‑on execution and the judgment to operate effectively in a complex, regulated, and fast‑evolving environment.
As a senior leader, the VP Finance will drive financial discipline and strategy, establish scalable systems and governance, and help position the company for its next phase of growth, including enhanced audit readiness and long‑term IPO readiness. The role works in close partnership with the CEO and executive leadership team to align financial strategy with operational execution and growth objectives.
The VP Finance reports to the CEO and is onsite in our Richmond and Berkeley offices.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute the company’s financial strategy, aligning with the overall business goals and objectives.
- Prepare for IPO by ensuring robust financials for audit readiness and optimizing the organizational structure, people, systems, controls, and processes. Engage with capital sources and develop a compelling investor narrative.
- Lead end‑to‑end financial forecasting and budgeting processes, ensuring accurate projections and effective resource allocation.
- Strengthen governance and controls in compliance with GAAP, IFRS, SOX and J‑SOX and industry specific standards.
- Build scalable financial systems and processes to align with target state ERP design to enable seamless implementation and effective change management.
- Lead and develop a lean accounting and finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Partner cross‑functionally with operations, quality, regulatory, R&D, and supply chain teams to ensure the alignment of financial and strategic goals.
- Manage the annual audit process and tax filings, acting as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Collaborate with COO to review and ensure all agreements with donor agencies, partners, and sales opportunities are fiscally sound, financially practical, and adhere to regulatory compliance.
- Advise executive leadership team on financially feasible approaches to strategic decision‑making such as acquisitions, partnerships, contracts, real estate assets, technology, and internal operations.
- Support board reporting, investor materials, and long‑term IPO readiness initiatives.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting required; MBA strongly preferred.
- CPA required.
- Minimum 12 years of progressive finance and accounting experience with increasing leadership responsibilities.
- Experience in regulated industries such as biotech, med‑tech, biologics, or life sciences and working with regulatory bodies (FDA, EMA) and related compliance processes.
- Exposure to audit environments and public‑company readiness.
- Builder mindset with strong execution and strategic capability.
- Experience partnering with a Venture Capital or Private Equity‑backed company, including investor reporting and capital management.
- Successful experience in a Big 4 or Tier 2 accounting firm is preferred.
