Position: Epidemiologist Evaluator | RESEARCH SCIENTIST II (EPIDEMIOLOGY/BIOSTATISTICS)

The Office of STIs and HCV (OSH) is part of the Division of HIV, STIs, and HCV, within the Center for Infectious Diseases, of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

The CDPH is dedicated to protecting and optimizing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities. The mission of CDPH’s Office of STIs and HCV is to reduce the transmission and impact of sexually transmitted infections (STI), mpox and viral hepatitis in California, particularly among communities disproportionately affected by these infections. Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting public health data on bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), viral hepatitis C (HCV), mpox, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and/or other communicable diseases, using these data to describe, assess, and evaluate morbidity and mortality due to these disease conditions in California, and assess screening, positivity, and treatment metrics.

The Research Scientist II (RS II) [Epidemiology/Biostatistics (Epi/Bio)] supports public health scientific inquiries using STI, HCV, mpox, HIV and other emerging infections data, and aids in the development of cross-cutting recommendations, metrics, guidance documents, and reports based on findings. The RS II (Epi/Bio) conducts analyses, assessments, and evaluations that are guided by best practices of epidemiologic and statistical methods. The RS II (Epi/Bio) develops reports, data visualizations, charts, tables, manuscripts, presentations, and other data dissemination resources that interpret and communicate data and results to Office of STIs and HCV (OSH) and CDPH colleagues, local health jurisdiction (LHJ) partners, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This position will analyze and interpret data from multiple sources, such as public health surveillance, electronic health record (EHR) and linkage to care (LTC) data associated with the Emergency Department Screening Program (EDSP), as well as other external data sources. The RS II (Epi/Bio) focuses on leveraging internal and external data sources to enhance the OSH’s ability to better understand and assess trends in STIs, HCV, mpox, and HIV.

The RS II (Epi/Bio) provides technical assistance and guidance related to complex epidemiologic analyses for the OSH, and partners in CDPH, LHJs, and other external partners. Additional responsibilities include participating in national work groups, conferences, and meetings. Moderate overnight travel is required.
