Department Overview: Gas Operations ensures the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to customers and is responsible for all aspects of PG&E’s gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary: This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification. The Corrosion Mechanic‑NACE CP1 installs, performs maintenance and operates cathodic protection equipment on gas pipelines. The role requires troubleshooting and maintaining equipment, collecting corrosion data, and working independently or with other Corrosion Department positions. The individual must safely drive, work extended hours and wear company‑provided PPE.

This position is a DOT covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. The role may be subject to Joint Apprentice Training Committee review and approval; provisional hires must complete targeted training to achieve journey‑level knowledge.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Obtain pipe/soil saturation reads at meters, frames and covers using equipment; obtain rectifier reads on poles and underground.
  • Use the Vivax device to troubleshoot pipeline protection problems at the rectifier or insulation point, following current and walking with a receiver to locate contacts; may clear contact using hand tools.
  • Prepare and color‑code maps to identify steel main, pipeline and anodes; check pipe/soil saturation and span current flow by attaching Vivax devices to insulation points or rectifiers; survey entire area or key points for resurveys.
  • Drive vehicle to job sites; load/unload tools and equipment; perform vehicle checks and washing.
  • Mentor Apprentice Corrosion Mechanics and/or assist Senior Corrosion Mechanic NACE‑CP2 or Lead Corrosion Mechanic as required.
  • Attend safety and compliance meetings.
  • Conduct A‑form inspections.
  • Conduct corrosometer probe readings and rectifier‑monitoring remotely or on site.
  • Perform casing, soil resistance, magnetic particle and isolation testing.
  • Perform coupon test station monitoring.
  • Perform CPA troubleshooting, including using ACCA Defect Mapper or wire spanning.
  • Perform galvanic anode installation.
  • Perform liquid sampling.
  • Perform pipe‑to‑soil readings.
  • Take ultrasonic pipe wall thickness readings and pit depth measurements.
  • Perform visual evaluation of pipe coating.
  • Complete atmospheric corrosion surveys.
  • Perform non‑USA pipe locating and marking and calibrate equipment used in those tasks.
  • Support DOT operations, maintenance and emergency response activities as assigned.

Qualifications – Minimum:

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Valid Class C California Driver’s License by day one of hire.
  • Ability to wear company‑provided PPE.
  • Completion of Apprentice Corrosion Mechanic program and/or NACE CP Level 1 training.
  • If hired as provisional, complete the provisional training plan within the agreed timeline.
  • Drive and work safely in all weather and road conditions.
  • Work flexible schedules, extended hours, nights, weekends and/or overtime (scheduled or ad hoc).

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Minimum one year of Utility Construction experience.
  • Pipeline cathodic protection system troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience in corrosion control in a pipeline operating environment.
  • Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems, corrosion‑related portions of NEC, and NACE standards.
  • Experience with PG&E.
  • Applicants within 50 miles of headquarters receive additional consideration.

Compensation: Hourly wage of $65.27 per hour, subject to collective bargaining agreements. Wage is specific to the locality and based on skills, education, licenses, certifications, experience, geographic location and market value.
