About The Position

The Sonographer supports the Reid Health Mission, Vision, Values, and Key Service Behaviors. The Sonographer performs Ultrasound diagnostic imaging exams on patients per physician/provider orders with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Corroborates patient’s clinical history with procedure; ensures information is documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Prepares patients for procedures, providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
  • Selects and operates imaging equipment and associated accessories to successfully perform procedures.
  • Selects appropriate anatomic program for the desired protocol.
  • Positions patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.
  • Immobilizes patients as required for appropriate examination.
  • Competently operates Ultrasound equipment.
  • Evaluates Ultrasound images for technical quality; manipulates display parameters, and provides hard copy and electronic records, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
  • Responsible for assigned area and reporting of equipment malfunction; contacts appropriate service vendor when having errors and/or issues with any equipment.
  • Responsible for the physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
  • Maintains archival storage of digitized data as appropriate.
  • Obtains vital signs (pulse, respiration, and blood pressure) when needed.
  • Provides patient education; explains pre- and post-procedural instructions to patient and/or patient’s family.
  • Provides practical instruction for students and/or healthcare professionals.
  • Participates in the department quality assessment and improvement plan.
  • Applies principles of patient safety during all procedures, including assisting/transporting patients.
  • Provides assistance to office staff with answering the phones and any other office work that is needed.
  • Ensures that each radiology room is clean before bringing a patient into the room, cleaned daily, and stocked with supplies.
  • Wipes down equipment after use of each patient with a hospital-approved germicide.
  • Completes all paperwork in PACS, RIS, etc.
  • Ensures all paperwork is correct and complete when submitting a PACS correction to a PACS superuser or administrator.
  • Supervises students when applicable.
  • Performs monthly Quality Assurance.
  • Attends meetings when able, based on patient care needs.
  • Obtains 30 hours of Continuing Education every 3 years.
  • Completes all required computer-based learning modules on time.
  • Attends 75% of department meetings.
  • Adheres to regulatory requirements (DNV, HFAP, ISDH, OSHA, ACR, etc.).
  • Assists in obtaining/maintaining departmental accreditations if applicable.
  • Completes annual competencies.
  • Follows Reid Health flu vaccine policy.
  • Adheres to Radiation Safety Policies.
  • May be subject to irregular hours and call.
  • Assists in emergency or crisis situations as needed.
  • Copes with unpredictable situations.
  • Any and all other assigned duties.
  • May need to function across the different modalities within the department as technically competent.
Education & Experience

Education Required

  • Must be a graduate of an approved, 24-month program in Radiologic Technology accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and the United States Department of Education (USDOE).
  • Documented education, training, and competency in Ultrasound.
  • Documented education, training, and competency in any other modality that is specific to their skills.

Education Preferred

  • Education in additional radiology modalities would be nice to have.
  • A minimum of 2 years in an approved educational program.
Experience

Experience Required

  • A minimum of 2 years in an approved educational program.

Experience Preferred

  • Experience as a registered medical sonographer is beneficial.
  • Experience as a licensed radiologic technologist in Radiography is beneficial.
Licensure & Certification
  • Must possess a Radiologic Technologist License issued by the Indiana State Department of Health.
  • Registered as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or registry eligible.
  • If not ARDMS registered at the time of hire, the employee is expected to obtain ARDMS registry within approximately one year of employment.
  • Certification and Registry in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required. Additional ARRT certification in any other modality(s) is preferred.
