Position SummaryThe Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for directing and coordinating patient care while providing comprehensive nursing services in a state‑operated hospital or residential facility. This role includes assessing patient health needs, developing and implementing nursing care plans, administering medications, maintaining accurate medical records, and supporting a safe, therapeutic environment. The RN collaborates closely with interdisciplinary team members, serves as a patient advocate, and ensures compliance with facility policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
EssentialDuties And Responsibilities Clinical Care & Treatment
- Prioritize, organize, and deliver daily nursing care for assigned patients.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of patients’ physical and psychosocial status from admission through discharge.
- Develop, implement, and revise individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with physicians and clinical staff.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and manage agitated or distressed patients.
- Educate patients and family members regarding medications, procedures, treatment goals, and care plans.
- Serve as a patient advocate to promote safety, dignity, and quality of care.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and facility policies.
- Monitor patients for medication effectiveness, side effects, and adverse reactions.
- Complete medication administration supervision monitors and clinical observation documentation for support staff.
- Assign patient care duties and direct support staff to ensure efficient workflow on the unit.
- Communicate patient care issues, safety concerns, and workflow challenges to unit supervisors.
- Provide orientation, guidance, and ongoing support to staff assigned to the unit.
- Collaborate daily with interdisciplinary team members to support coordinated patient care.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete nursing documentation, including nursing notes, transfer forms, and clinical records.
- Ensure all documentation complies with facility standards, nursing practice regulations, and HIPAA guidelines.
- Follow established nursing, medical, and facility policies and procedures at all times.
- Ensure adherence to safety, infection control, and environmental standards for the unit.
- Utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Maintain vigilance for potentially dangerous situations and respond appropriately to protect patients, staff, and visitors.
- Demonstrate sound clinical judgment while working with limited supervision.
- Maintain professional communication with patients, families, guardians, agency partners, and community stakeholders.
- Participate in rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, on‑call coverage, and irregular hours as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned based on operational needs.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited institution required.
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Indiana.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Must maintain required behavioral intervention training.
- Ability to assess and manage patients with a wide range of medical and psychosocial conditions.
- Strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records, MS Office applications, and clinical documentation systems.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to understand and apply medical, nursing, and facility terminology.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Capacity to manage stress and maintain professionalism in high‑pressure environments.
- Ability to run short distances to provide immediate patient care or respond to emergencies.
- Frequent walking, standing, stair climbing, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Above‑average strength required for patient restraint when necessary per policy.
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and environmental hazards.
- Work performed in a state‑operated hospital or residential facility with rotating shifts and potential on‑call requirements.
