The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state.
Responsibilities- Maintain a secure and protective environment at the facility by observing, taking action and reporting incidents or security violations involving residents.
- Initiate emergency response as appropriate and handle after‑hours emergency calls.
- Monitor alarms, surveillance cameras, and patrol buildings and grounds.
- Check badges or proper identification at facility gate/entrance.
- Disseminate and coordinate emergency responses and information, notifying facility management and law enforcement if appropriate.
- Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections in all buildings.
- Identify unfamiliar persons on campus and within homes/buildings as captured on surveillance and during routine patrols.
- Ensure appropriate lighting for the safety of residents, staff, and visitors.
- Train other security officers as needed.
- Attend work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime.
- Monitors surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences and reports emergencies immediately.
- Report abuse, neglect and/or exploitation allegations through proper channels if suspected during surveillance.
- Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds, taking appropriate action upon discovery of unauthorized persons or activities.
- Respond to all fire alarms and investigate the cause, taking any emergency action if necessary.
- Assist with fire drills and other life safety checks as directed.
- Assist in the apprehension of suspects, where reasonably possible.
- Prepare timely and accurate documentation relative to emergencies and/or security violations.
- Evaluate and make recommendations for changes to security regulations.
- Train, coach, and mentor new security officers as needed.
- Attend mandatory training to meet requirements and develop professionally.
- Participate in disaster response or COOP activation as required.
- Knowledge of building security, surveillance equipment, admission and exit rules, and alarm devices.
- Skill in oral and written communication, including writing incident reports.
- Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive residents, visitors, and employees.
- Ability to patrol grounds, detect danger, and take appropriate action.
- Physical ability to walk extensively, run occasionally, and assist in restraining during an emergency.
- Ability to operate a state vehicle.
- Ability to prepare concise reports.
- Ability to train others.
- Ability to remain calm, reasonable, and react quickly in emergency situations.
- Skill in defusing potentially difficult situations.
- Skill in monitoring and assessing situations and determining appropriate response.
- Knowledge of basic traffic and parking regulations.
