Mission or Goal of Unit: Our mission is to provide unparalleled patient care, educate and train emerging leaders in emergency medicine and set a national standard for quality and safety metrics by responding to the changing needs of emergency healthcare through innovative research and systems development.
Chief Purpose of this position: We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our dynamic academic emergency medicine team as a Physician Informaticist. We are seeking a full-time candidate who will work 75% of their time clinically and 25% dedicated to clinical informaticist duties. The clinical time will be split between our downtown adult ED and our free-standing ED at New Kent.
The candidate will contribute to our mission of providing exceptional patient care, innovative research, and high-quality education in emergency medicine. Our Emergency Medicine Physician Informaticist would bridge clinical practice and technology by analyzing patient data, optimizing workflows, and implementing IT systems to improve patient care, safety, and efficiency in the Emergency Department. This role requires a strong understanding of both clinical operations and information systems to ensure technology effectively supports evidence-based decision-making and enhances the overall patient experience.
The faculty member will work primarily at the VCU Medical Center (Richmond VA), which is a largely underserved, Level 1 adult and pediatric Trauma Center and tertiary referral center seeing over 100,000 patients per year. The department is nationally recognized for innovative management of chest pain, stroke, major trauma, and high acuity medical cases. In addition, the Virginia Poison Center is a division component of this department.
The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine also provides coverage at other VCU Health facilities including a free-standing Emergency Department serving the rural patient community of New Kent, Virginia, which sees over 15,000 patients per year and community hospitals in Tappahannock, Virginia and South Hill, Virginia which see 20,000 patients per year and 25,000 patients per year, respectively.
Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Emergency Medicine houses an Emergency Medicine 3-year residency program. We also partner with the Air Force and train their residents as well. We are one of only 12 programs to house a combined Emergency Medicine-Internal Medicine residency program. Finally, the Department offers fellowship programs in Administration, Emergency Medical Service, Medical Education, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Clinical Toxicology, Ultrasound, and Ultrasound Resuscitation.
Faculty may be recruited at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor commensurate with experience.
Position Responsibilities:
- Clinical - Provide excellent clinical care by demonstrating proficiency in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of acute medical and traumatic conditions. Provide efficient, high quality patient care that reflects current professional practice norms and skills and is consistent with accepted utilization guidelines.
- Education - Participate actively in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and other learners, providing didactic lectures, bedside teaching, and simulation-based training.
- Research - Engage in impactful research and scholarly activities, generating knowledge and contributing to advancements in emergency medicine. Support the departments research initiatives.
- Quality/Safety - Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes, participate in quality improvement initiatives and promote patient safety and satisfaction.
- Administrative - Serve as the Departments expert on matters related to clinical informatics, Epic functionality for an ED practice, telehealth, and adoption of AI tools in the clinical environment. Engage with health system IT leadership on new IT projects/initiatives that impact Emergency Care to ensure improvement with departmental workflows and minimization of disruptions to clinical practice. Educate faculty, APPs, residents and other team members about newly adopted technologies as they roll out.
Contribute to administrative and leadership responsibilities within the department, fostering a positive work environment and supporting the growth of emergency medicine services.
- Unrestricted Virginia Medical license or ability to qualify for one
- Board Certified/Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine
- Board Certified in Clinical Informatics
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research within the field of Emergency Medicine and health informatics.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team.
