VCU's Department of Pediatrics is committed to training and developing the next generation of dedicated pediatricians, caring for each child as if they were our own and advancing the specialty and its myriad subspecialties through innovative research. Our central hub is at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU in downtown Richmond, with satellite locations and community clinics all throughout Central Virginia.

Purpose of this position:

The VCCN medical director will provide clinical expertise and leadership in value-based care and quality improvement for Virginia Children’s Care Network. They will work with the CHoR Executive leadership, VCCN Executive Director, VCCN Board and committee chairs, VCCN board members, and VCUHS staff and leadership to set network clinical goals and priorities, to develop and select quality improvement and professional standards, and clearly articulate the mission and vision of VCCN.

They will also be expected to participate in the Center for Team Care. The medical director will co‑lead efforts to expand partnerships with both payers, practices, et. al. within Central Virginia, Northern Virginia, and other key markets in the state. Directs the medical management, care coordination and quality improvement activities of VCCN and monitors all reports, information summaries, relevant publications, clinical, utilization, and financial data related to these activities in collaboration with VCCN leadership and staff and VCCN physician‑led committees.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Advises the planning, development, and implementation of strategies for improving health outcomes, quality care delivery and cost containment in conjunction with VCCN leadership and staff and VCCN physician‑led committees.
  • Communicates with colleagues, CHoR and VCUHS Department Chairs, VCUHS and medical practice administrative leadership, and legal and regulatory entities to champion the initiatives of the CIN.
  • Ensures communication and alignment with CHoR’s leadership and overall quality strategy.
  • Engages and maintains relationships with private‑practice physician leaders in the community and CHoR faculty.
  • Engages and maintains relationships with VCUHS clinical and administrative executive leaders. Participates in community outreach efforts to educate and engage physicians around clinical integration and quality activities for pediatric patients.
  • Participates in the development and execution of payer contracting strategies in cooperation with the VCCN Executive Director and other staff of VCCN and member organizations.
  • Facilitates the review of quality and efficiency metrics to be applied to physicians participating in VCCN and leads the development of recommended performance thresholds for incentive‑based payments based on selected metrics, in collaboration with the VCCN Quality Improvement Committee.
  • Actively engages with VCCN Board of Managers and VCCN committees, as appropriate.
  • Assists in the development of future community physician leaders within VCCN.
  • Leads and facilitates committees as needed to foster collaboration between participating CIN physicians.
  • Develops a strong understanding of clinical quality and clinical integration programs, and governmental regulations that relate to and affect clinical integration activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director of CIN.
  • In partnership with Center for Team Care Medical Director, help assist in development of Center for Team Care protocols, practice guidelines and other initiatives to improve delivery of contemporary, evidence‑based care for pediatric populations.
