Mission or Goal of Unit

The Virginia Commonwealth University, in collaboration with the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU, has built the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Division into a model division dedicated to academic excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research. The division provides outstanding training in infectious diseases for medical students, residents, and subspecialty fellows, and generates new knowledge through both clinical and basic science research projects.

Purpose of this Position in Support of Above Mission or Goal

The Division of Pediatric infectious Diseases in the Department of Pediatrics at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) is seeking a full-time, physician‑scientist faculty member at any level (Instructor, Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor). We are in an exciting growth phase in the Department of Pediatrics, building innovative research that advances discovery and application to improve children's health.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of peer‑reviewed publications and successful grant/contract funding. We welcome all types of research including basic, clinical, translational, epidemiologic, or outcomes. The preferred candidate will thrive in an environment that focuses on teamwork, collaboration, team science, dedication to patients, families, faculty/fellows, and advancing the field of Infectious Disease. Candidates should have advanced training in research and a commitment to mentoring.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching: Provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, residents, chief residents, and fellows.
  • Research: Advanced knowledge in research methods; participate in basic, clinical, translational, or outcomes research; secure revenue through grants and contracts; serve as a research mentor to other members of the division and the Department of Pediatrics.
  • Service: Serve on departmental or School of Medicine level committees; engage in professional activities through journal review, conference presentations, etc.
  • Clinical: Provide clinical support within the Division of Infectious Diseases supporting the clinical mission of CHoR of VCU Health System; inpatient and outpatient consultation for children with suspected or complex infections.
  • Other: Take on administrative duties associated with this role; maintain required certifications such as CITI and IACUC.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Experience with clinical care of patients
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an academic medical center
  • Preference will be given to applicants with clinical or basic science research experience and the ability to apply for and obtain early career awards from the NIH or other funding agencies.
  • Success in generating revenue (grants/contracts)
