St. Joseph's Villa is currently recruiting for a full‑time Instructional Assistant to serve children with a variety of special needs. Working in a collaborative, team‑based model and using a systems approach within the psycho‑education model, the Instructional Assistant works with a Special Education Teacher to design and implement lesson and behavioral plans and assumes responsibility for the classroom in the teacher’s absence.
All work is performed safely, effectively, to the highest ethical standards, and in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards and St. Joseph’s Villa’s mission, values, and guiding principles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of life skills counseling techniques, basic classroom procedures, and appropriate intervention procedures with socially, emotionally, cognitively and developmentally challenged children ages 5‑22.
- Basic academic skills necessary to effectively perform job responsibilities.
- Able to creatively organize and implement a variety of supplemental programs for students.
- Knowledge of basic first aid procedures and appropriate methods of physical restraint.
- Able to use proprietary software and work effectively in a collaborative, shared‑leadership environment.
- Able to be flexible, handle stressful situations, and serve as an effective role model.
Work schedule:
Monday‑Friday, 7:45 am – 4:00 pm
Salary: $22.10 per hour
FLSA:
Non‑Exempt
- Maintains sight and sound supervision of clients.
- Maintains appropriate, helpful student interaction in daily activities (classroom, play areas, field trips, etc.).
- Assists in developing lesson plans, objectives, and methods to provide effective education to students.
- Assists with treatment decisions concerning students and follows through on those decisions.
- Maintains appropriate discipline and implements structured activities during assigned work hours.
- Provides instruction in life skills development in coordination with other professional staff.
- Uses approved behavior‑management techniques to work with students in crisis.
- Provides input for the classroom teacher on progress report development.
- Assists in case management duties, including progress reports, family communication, and community support coordination.
- Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing therapeutic recreational activities.
- Works with individuals and groups on specific skill areas as designated by supervisor.
- Provides necessary implementation and supervision of lesson plans in the teacher’s absence.
- Models appropriate professional behavior and dress.
- Promotes good community relations and utilizes needed community services.
- Participates in staff meetings and program activities, including after‑school and evening programs.
- Evaluates work processes and proposes recommendations for continuous quality improvement.
- Attends scheduled training programs for professional development, including required trainings by St. Joseph’s Villa and regulatory bodies.
- May support student athletics, arts, or other extracurricular activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- BS/BA degree in education or a related field with at least one year of experience with a similar population.
- Or at least four years of experience in a school setting with a similar population if used in lieu of a degree.
- Experience with Windows, Outlook, internet, and MS Word; proprietary software experience preferred.
- Valid VA driver’s license with excellent driving record.
