Job Overview
The Instructional Designer supports instructional excellence and student success by partnering with faculty and academic units to design, develop, and enhance engaging, accessible, and high-quality courses across all delivery modalities (face‑to‑face, hybrid, HyFlex, and online). Reporting to the Director of the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning, this 12‑month professional faculty position requires on‑site presence, with occasional travel to college locations, and limited telework options subject to supervisory determination.
Responsibilities- Apply recognized instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, Backward Design) and adult learning theories to create measurable learning outcomes.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of online pedagogy, inclusive teaching strategies, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Provide expertise in andragogy, pedagogy, and educational technology to promote and implement UDL principles and ensure compliance with ADA and Section 508 accessibility standards.
- Lead workshops, consultations, and individualized coaching on course design, effective teaching practices, and the innovative use of instructional technologies, including AI tools.
- Contribute to the administration and support of the College’s Learning Management System (Canvas), collaborating with faculty, staff, and IT to ensure smooth system operation and meaningful technology integration.
- Perform other duties as required, including assistance during emergency declarations by the Governor and general state government support.
- Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in a field related to teaching, learning, educational technology, higher education, or a closely related field; or a combination of education (minimum Master’s) and professional experience demonstrating competency in instructional design and technology.
- Professional experience in instructional design, educational technology, or faculty support in higher education, training, or related fields.
- Advanced proficiency with learning management systems such as Canvas, including course creation, organization, deployment, user support, and basic troubleshooting.
- Two or more years of postsecondary teaching experience, preferably including online teaching and/or community college settings.
- Experience supporting faculty in course design, instructional technology integration, and professional development.
- Experience creating multimedia learning materials (video, interactive modules, graphics, or other media).
- Professional certification or demonstrated experience applying quality and accessibility frameworks (Quality Matters, OSCQR, VCCS EDLT, Universal Design for Learning).
Hiring range: $65,571 – $130,025 per year. Actual starting salary will be commensurate with education and/or experience. The position is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies and the Virginia Community College System.
TeleworkTelework may be an option for certain eligible positions, determined by the type of work and job requirements, as defined by agency leadership. Employees are expected to return to the workplace most days, with telework subject to change based on business needs.
