Job Description

CDM Smith has an immediate need of a senior engineer to support a variety of projects in our Water Services Group. This position can be based at any of our Virginia offices.

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in managing and executing complex water management initiatives, ensuring sustainable solutions for water treatment, quality, and conservation. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of environmental regulations, advanced engineering techniques, and a passion for creating environmentally responsible outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • With high‑level goals provided, lead teams to create water and wastewater treatment facilities, water and sewer systems, pipelines, pump stations, remediation sites, solid waste facilities, etc., engineering designs of moderate to high complexity to meet client project requirements.
  • Review draft designs and reports for compliance with federal, state and local regulations and sign off on completed designs. Ensure firm policies and practices are followed on all designs.
  • Perform site reviews and studies, as needed, to ensure designs are aligned with location specifications. Update design requirements as necessary.
  • Perform water quality analyses and modeling.
  • Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management by developing white papers and technical design documentation of new or special case designs, studies, etc. Submit technical papers and designs for publishing to technical journals.
  • Collaborate with sales staff to create proposals in response to current and potential client requests for proposal (RFPs). Review draft proposals for adherence to firm, industry, state, local and federal regulations and best practices.
  • Meet with current and potential future clients to review their current and future design needs. Attend conferences, symposia, etc. to improve the visibility of the firm’s products and services in collaboration with applicable sales staff. Act as a point of contact for external client and related industry contacts. Collaborate with clients and government officials to clarify technical questions and provide updates to project management as necessary.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to more junior staff. Mentor more junior staff and develop them for future growth within the discipline and firm. May supervise the work of junior engineers on project work.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • 12 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Expert Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
  • Expert Knowledge of engineering principles of design.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.
