Payroll Tax Compliance Lead – Capital One
SummarySupport the U.S. payroll tax team by ensuring compliance with payroll activities and maintaining all state and local tax accounts. Key responsibilities include timely tax setup in Workday and ADP Smartcompliance, tax account maintenance, and clear communication of tax changes to associates.
Responsibilities- Support critical functions with continuous improvement focus.
- Oversee maintenance of state and local tax withholding registrations and employer account numbers.
- Analyze escalated tax notices and develop corrective action plans.
- Research, document, and resolve tax account discrepancies with vendors.
- Build strong working relationships with corporate tax, tax audit, and payroll input providers.
- Communicate pay impacts to associates due to tax law changes.
- Ensure timely and accurate employee tax set‑up in payroll systems.
- Calculate gross‑to‑net pay outside the payroll system and explain results to associates.
- Assist HR partners in resolving payroll system errors and maintaining accurate data.
- Assist in year‑end W‑2 preparation, bonus payroll, and equity processing.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years payroll tax experience.
- Minimum 2 years experience with multi‑state payroll (5,000+ employees).
- Minimum 2 years experience with local taxes.
- Minimum 2 years experience with tax agency relations.
- Understanding of gross‑to‑net calculations, including pre/post‑tax deductions and taxable benefits.
- Strong understanding of end‑to‑end payroll and payroll tax laws and regulations.
- Associate degree.
- Professional certification (e.g., FPC or CPP).
- 5+ years payroll tax experience.
- 5+ years tax agency relations experience.
- Experience with Workday Payroll and ADP Smart Compliance.
- Leadership experience.
- Customer service skills, attention to detail, and decision‑making ability.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong desire to grow and learn.
- Familiarity with pay and benefit programs.
- Proficiency in Google Suite.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Richmond, VA: $78,400 – $89,500 (Senior HR Associate)
This role is eligible for performance‑based incentive compensation, including cash bonuses and/or long‑term incentives. A comprehensive benefits package is available, eligibility varies by status and level.
