Do you have a passion for public safety and service? Do you want the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and have a role in ensuring Virginia’s critical energy infrastructure operates safely? The Virginia State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) Division of Utility and Railroad Safety (URS) is seeking a Safety Inspector to join our team.
This Safety Inspector position will be responsible for inspecting operators of pipelines that transport natural gas and hazardous liquids throughout Virginia to ensure that they are complying with the SCC’s pipeline safety regulations and the Virginia Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act.
This position requires travel throughout the state (and occasionally outside of the Commonwealth) to perform a variety of inspections, including pipeline design, construction, operations, maintenance, emergency response, qualification of personnel, integrity management, and accident investigations. A Safety Inspector’s day-to-day experience varies greatly and is not typically confined to a desk. The role involves outdoor work across the state for year‑round inspections, with some office work reviewing records and procedures for compliance.

On‑the‑job training is provided. The selected candidate will complete introductory pipeline safety courses to become a qualified Safety Inspector. The courses are paid for and supported by the SCC (including travel and lodging expenses) and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in public safety (law enforcement, fire/emergency medical services, military, emergency management), gas or hazardous liquid pipeline safety, pipeline construction, damage prevention, and/or current PHMSA training qualifications.
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred and is a minimum requirement in lieu of related experience.
- Ability to conduct inspections and investigations, analyze data, and thoroughly document/report results, as well as suggest corrective actions.
- Ability to analyze and interpret laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to traverse rough terrain and travel extensively in and out of Virginia, including overnight travel.
- Ability to work and manage tasks independently.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with SCC Staff, industry personnel, and the general public.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret complex policies and procedures, along with manufacturer’s instructions for components and tools used in the pipeline industry.
- Ability to serve in an “on call” rotation with other qualified Safety Inspectors within the URS division.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
