The Department of Cellular, Molecular and Genetic Medicine is dedicated to unraveling the fundamental biology that supports health and drives disease. Our faculty, trainees and students tackle some of the most pressing challenges in biomedical science, from the molecular and genetic roots of disease to the complexities of whole-body physiology. Our foundational studies are driving the frontiers of scientific discovery, pushing the boundaries of what we understand about biology, disease and the human body.

From our labs in downtown Richmond to research collaborations around the world, our work is generating new knowledge, influencing the direction of biological science and redefining what is possible in biomedical research.

Responsibilities

A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Can

E. Senkal in the Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Genetic Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. The successful candidate will participate in a NIH-funded project on the molecular mechanisms regulating ceramide generation and functional roles of ceramides in iron-dependent cell death pathways. Broadly, we study the metabolism, regulation, and biological functions of sphingolipids in cancer. Candidates with commitment to research excellence who are hard-working, and technically skilled are welcomed to apply.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree (preferably recently graduated or with less than two years of post-doctoral experience), and have hands-on experience in biochemistry, cancer biology, molecular biology, cell biology or other relevant fields.
  • The candidates should have excellent verbal and written scientific communication skills with experience in writing proposals and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Hands-on experience in cancer molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and/or pharmacology.
  • Ability to design and perform experiments, and to analyze and interpret data.
  • Ability to maintain detailed documentation through electronic and notebook means.
  • Ability to work independently as well as ability to work professionally and efficiently within the research group as a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a Post-Doc at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in lipid signaling, enzyme biochemistry, and/or biochemistry techniques such as recombinant protein expression and purification, and protein structure determination.
Salary Range

Commensurate with NIH
