Location: Adult Outpatient Pavilion
Days/hours: Monday–Friday 7:30 AM–5:00 PM (flexible), with opportunity to pick up extra hours on evenings, nights and weekends at main campus and other satellite locations.
The practice of radiography is performed by radiologic technologists responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. A radiographer performs radiographic procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Radiography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information.
A radiographer recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure.
- Perform radiographic procedures.
- Determine radiographic exposure factors.
- Assist the licensed independent practitioner (LIP) with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional radiographic procedures; perform non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures as prescribed by a LIP.
- Apply the principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiographic procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
- Receive, relay, and document verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in the patient's medical record.
- Corroborate patient's clinical history with the ordered procedure while ensuring information is documented and available for use by a LIP.
- Verify informed consent.
- Assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures; prepare patients for procedures.
- Apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
- Perform venipuncture and maintain intravenous access per procedural protocol based on an imaging order and a LIP.
- Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a LIP.
- Evaluate images for technical quality and ensure proper identification is recorded.
- Identify and escalate emergency situations and manage until appropriate LIP, EMS, MERT, RRT, or Code Team arrives to assume control.
- Provide patient education related to imaging procedures.
- Educate, mentor, and oversee students and other learners in the Radiology environment.
- Participate in and/or perform ongoing quality assurance activities.
- Registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT-R).
- For new graduates:
Must pass certification exam within 90 days of graduation date. - Current Certification by ARRT for continued employment.
- Experience
REQUIRED:
N/A. - Experience PREFERRED:
One (1) year of previous radiologic technologist work experience; previous work experience in an academic medical center environment.
- Required:
Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology recognized by ARRT. - Preferred:
Bachelor's Degree in Radiologic Technology or closely related field from an accredited program.
- Radiographers independently perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of radiologic imaging exams.
- Radiographers independently complete imaging exams based on physician's written order, department protocols, and institutional safety standards.
- Radiographers represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System and adhere to regulatory standards, health system and department policies.
- Resolves basic service delivery issues.
- None.
- Lead technologists may perform lead technologist functions such as coordinating work assignments, workflow, and staffing for an assigned shift/area; serve as clinical or technical resource; provide training.
- Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your manager or supervisor.
- Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted to meet staffing needs of the health system.
- Weekend and after-hours coverage may be required based on workload and staffing needs.
- Radiologic Technologists are considered "Essential Employees" who may be required to report to work per VCUHS policy.
