Department Summary:The mission of the Department of Urology within the VCU School of Medicine is the pursuit of excellence in all three areas of an academic surgical practice: patient care, teaching, and research.
A laboratory research assistant in the Department of Urology at VCU will work with our clinical research team, including faculty, nursing staff, residents, and other learners, in the performance of clinical research work. The work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and focuses on the development of new technologies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of overactive bladder and other forms of voiding dysfunction.
We incorporate novel technologies into urodynamic testing, including bladder ultrasound and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). The studies are clinical and involve active clinical spaces, so professionalism and sensitivity to patient needs is a must. Typical duties include organizational management of the lab, recruitment of participants, data collection and analysis, study performance, and working on presentations and publications.
July 2026 – June 2027 (start and end dates flexible)
Duties & Responsibilities:- Organization of research activities including participant schedules and procedures
- Recruitment of research participants
- Study regulation following Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements
- Performance of non‑invasive clinical studies (after training) using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and Ultrasound equipment
- Laboratory supply and equipment management
- Data collection with a clear organizational system using Microsoft Excel
- Data analysis, including production of high‑quality figures and presentations
- Academic writing and publication
Minimum Qualifications
- Previous clinical or basic science research experience preferred
- Dedication, independence, and problem‑solving skills
- Experience with data collection and management, preferably with Microsoft Excel
- Experience working in a fast‑paced clinical environment and with a demonstrated track‑record and commitment to professionalism
- Ability to work respectfully with faculty, staff, and learners from a variety of backgrounds
Salary Range: 18.00
