OverviewUnder the general supervision of the Chief Lead Technician, the ophthalmic technician performs a range of duties including preparing patients for exam, preparing examination and treatment rooms, performing basic and routine vision screening examinations, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments, and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities- Provides primary ophthalmic care and acts as a clinical assistant to the physician.
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patients, recording medical history, and confirming the purpose of the visit.
- Performs complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, sub‑specialty tests (refraction, VF test, A‑Scan biometry, Pachymetry, PAM evaluation, BAT, color testing, contact lens evaluation).
- Accurately records all information in the EMR (EPIC) system with 95 % accuracy, following VCUHS standards.
- Performs slit lamp examinations, visual field, pupil, motility, visual acuity, refraction, and tonometry assessments.
- Prepares patients for ophthalmology examination by dilating pupils, documenting changes, and communicating results to the attending physician.>
- Secures patient information; safeguards medical records; and maintains confidentiality.
- Counsels patients on physician’s orders, drops, contact lenses, medications, and answers questions about surgery and imaging.
- Maintains equipment operation by following procedures, troubleshooting, performing preventive maintenance, and reporting issues.
- Handles patient phone calls, messages, MyChart inquiries, and prescription refill requests.
- Performs patient work‑ups at established times while delivering high‑quality customer service.
- Opens and closes examination rooms, cleans, stocks, and prepares instruments for sterilization or high‑level disinfection.
- Sets up sterile trays for minor OR procedures and maintains the sterile field.
- Follows department policies, legal regulations, and VCUHS compliance requirements.
- Adheres to attendance and dress code policies.
- Willing to work at alternative VCUHS ophthalmology locations as needed.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment- Successful completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Course within 12 months.
- Obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) within 24 months of hire date.
Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in optometry/ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
Experience Preferred- Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
- Previous experience in an academic health care environment.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Education/Training PreferredSuccessful completion of Ophthalmic Assistant Program, Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
Independent Action(s) RequiredIndependently performs complete ophthalmic history, preliminary exams, sub‑specialty testing, maintains equipment, and coordinates patient flow.
