Job SummaryThe Director, Claims directs activities within General and Auto Liability Claims, Physical Damage Repairs, and Property & Cargo Claims, including loss control activities and third‑party provider relationships. This role manages a staff of approximately 40 professionals and oversees claims in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
Responsibilities- Provide strategic direction to the claims team, establishing goals and improving processes to enhance claim quality, cost control, and customer satisfaction.
- Identify exposures, recommend solutions, promote loss prevention, and maintain compliance with safety and risk management programs.
- Develop and implement processes for timely physical damage repairs in partnership with vendors, operations, and business units.
- Partner with Operations, Sales, Central Support, and Safety on liability, property, cargo, and physical damage matters.
- Ensure correct coverage to avoid major exposure while minimizing costs.
- Manage invoicing accuracy and reduce credits to improve financial results.
- Continuously improve by developing new processes, including the Process Integrity Program.
- Interact with field and senior management, internal legal counsel, safety directors, sales, and risk management to communicate claim issues.
- Act as primary backup for the Senior Director, assisting with operational aspects.
- Lead and direct claims managers, office manager, supervisors, analysts, and administrative staff, fostering development through training and individual plans.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Provide direction on high‑exposure claims and business processes.
- Update senior management on trends, compliance issues, and root‑cause analysis to support timely decisions.
- Build positive relationships with operations, sales, support, leadership, and customers, ensuring superior service and renewal support.
- Lead and direct special projects.
- Demonstrated managerial experience with a sizable staff.
- Ability to foster collaborative relationships and increase customer satisfaction.
- Skilled in strategic negotiations to drive favorable outcomes.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to influence executive, field management, and other business units.
- Creates a collaborative environment that drives engagement and results.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, finance or related field, or equivalent claims experience.
- 10+ years in the casualty claims field.
- 5+ years in vehicle rental/lease business or commercial trucking insurance (preferred).
- 5+ years of management or administrative experience.
- Knowledge of state laws covering ownership, joint & several liabilities.
- Strong understanding of insurance law, policy language, and contract interpretation.
- Knowledge of total quality management principles.
- Adjuster insurance licenses (I.I.A. or C.P.C.U.) preferred.
- Salary: $150,000 – $200,000 annually.
- Eligible for annual bonus, commission, and/or long‑term incentive plan.
