The Director of Programs is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED). This position is integral to advancing AFOI's mission by overseeing high-quality program delivery, staff oversight and development, and organizational growth. The Director will serve as a key external representative of AFOI in the community, ensuring that all programs operate with consistency, effectiveness, and measurable impact.

The ideal candidate is an experienced program leader who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. They will bring strategic thinking, strong management skills, and a passion for serving children and families impacted by incarceration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Management
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of AFOI's three core programming areas:
    Children's Services, Family Services, and Visitation Services including AFOI’s hallmark Transportation Services and Video Visitation Services
  • Troubleshoot programmatic challenges and implement timely, effective solutions
  • Lead and attend key leadership meetings, including Board Meetings, MAC & Site Meetings, Video Visitation Centers, and Partner Meetings
  • Maintain organized and accurate participant records in compliance with organizational standards
  • Coordinate programming activities across all service areas to ensure alignment and efficiency
  • Analyze program data, identify trends, and present findings and recommendations to the ED and Director of Operations (DO)
  • Support the organization's Strategic Plan and Long-Range Planning Process, contributing to goal-setting and future forecasting
  • Program Evaluation & Quality Assurance
  • Monitor program goals and objectives to ensure consistent progress and accountability
  • Establish and maintain data collection tools and evaluation frameworks across all programming areas
  • Provide reports with actionable insights and process improvement recommendations
  • Staff Management
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned program staff, team members, and volunteers
  • Manage interpersonal and performance-related matters with professionalism and fairness
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and regular one-on-one meetings with full-time staff
  • Lead onboarding and training for new programming staff, in conjunction with DO
  • Serve as the rotating on-call contact for program-related issues during designated months
  • Community Partnerships & Outreach
  • Build and maintain relationships with community agencies, referral organizations, and service partners to enhance support for children and families impacted by incarceration
  • Attend and represent AFOI at community meetings, events, and networking opportunities
  • Identify and map available services and events; coordinate joint programming initiatives in collaboration with the ED and DO
  • Serve as a key external-facing representative of the organization, engaging supporters and promoting AFOI's programs and services year-round
  • Collaborate with the ED and DO to develop compelling content for the website, printed materials, and organizational reports
  • Board & Fundraising Support
  • Collaborate with the ED, DO and board members on committee work and board meeting preparation
  • Prepare clear, informative board reports highlighting program progress, key updates, and relevant vignettes
  • Support resource allocation and budgetary planning across programs to ensure financial alignment
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives and grant-writing efforts related to AFOI's programming areas, including funding identification, fundraising events, and program data for submissions
  • Administrative Responsibilities
  • Update and maintain organizational policies, procedures, and programming forms as needed, in conjunction with DO
  • Manage and maintain documentation related to:
    Video Visitation Partner Meetings, Visitor Center Communications and Visits, Organizational and Program Marketing, ARPA compliance, Data Collection and Reporting, Staff Supervision records, Participant and COPPA Waivers, and Program Intake Forms
  • Oversee scheduling support and planning documents
  • Conduct consistent reviews of documentation processes to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Required
  • Master's Degree in Social Work or related human services field with 3-5 years leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in program management, preferably within a nonprofit or social services environment
