Job OverviewThe Surgery Trauma Progressive Care unit is the primary unit for trauma patients is the only Level‑I Trauma Center in the Richmond area certified by the American College of Surgeons. Patients sustain complex traumatic injuries such as gunshot wounds, motor vehicle accidents, falls, and assaults. Experienced RNs are encouraged to apply to this fast‑paced, high‑acuity unit. We offer additional training in the care of complex trauma patients and opportunities to grow your knowledge in chest tube, tracheostomy, multiple drains, and complex wound care.
ResponsibilitiesDeliver direct nursing care to trauma patients, including the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Provide direction, education, and develop leadership skills at the unit level. Deliver accurate documentation and administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions. Assist with multidisciplinary planning of care and mobilize resources to meet individualized patient and family needs. (Responsibilities as Clinical Nurse I, II, III vary;

Clinical Nurse I: Supports the healthcare team with prevention, wellness, and comfort of patients; provides education and direction; documents care; administers medications safely.
Clinical Nurse II: Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills; recognizes changes in patient situations; mobilizes resources and implements leadership at unit level; accurate documentation; safe medication administration.
Clinical Nurse III: Demonstrates advanced knowledge; anticipates changes; serves as role model; provides direction and education; accurate documentation; safe medication administration.
Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements – For Hire- Clin I, II, III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
- Clin I, II, III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia; AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
- Clin I: N/A.
- Clin II: 12–24 months RN experience.
- Clin III: 3 years clinical experience.
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in acute care. - Clin II, III:
Academic health care experience; experience with similar patient population in acute care.
- Clin I, II, III:
Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized/approved by state Board of Nursing. - All RNs without a BSN must enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years and complete within five years, unless grandfathered.
- Clin I, II, III:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited program. - Clin III:
Certification in specialty area.
Position Requirements
Clin I, II, III:
Work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; shift rotation and schedules established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules may adjust to meet unit requirements.
As appropriate based on unit assignment.
Physical RequirementsLifting 20–50 lbs. Exposure to potentially hazardous/infectious substances. Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing stairs, reaching overhead. Strong recall, reasoning, problem‑solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly. Adaptable to fast‑pace, noisy environment.
