Department Summary: The mission of University Student Health Services is to provide quality outpatient medical care and public health services, which includes health education programming that empowers students to become full participants in their health care.

Duties & Responsibilities

The mission of University Student Health Services is to provide quality outpatient medical care and public health services, which includes health education programming that empowers students to become full participants in their health care. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will provide direct primary health care and health education that relates to clinical issues and wellness in the VCU Student Health clinics located on both VCU campuses.

The NP or PA will:

  • perform comprehensive health assessments;
  • initiate referrals and consultations with physicians and other health providers;
  • perform, order and/or interpret diagnostic studies within the scope of practice of the collaborating physician;
  • provide case management for a select group of patients in conjunction with the collaborating physician;
  • manage patients within established standards of care within Student Health;
  • provide patient education which is interactive and meets the unique needs and values of each patient.

The NP or PA carries the after-hours pager for rotations as assigned; participates in the teaching of rotating residents and nursing students; as well as supports research activities of Student Health and administrative activities as assigned to support the smooth functioning of the clinic.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

Nurse Practitioner Qualifications
  • Successful completion of Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current national Nurse Practitioner certification
  • Licensure in Virginia as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Master’s degree in Nursing
  • Primary care experience as a Nurse Practitioner with strong gynecology skills
  • Prescriptive authority or candidacy to obtain prescriptive authority
  • References from Nurse Practitioner program and collaborating physicians
  • Experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Required:

Physician Assistant Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program
  • Current certification as a Physician Assistant
  • Licensure in Virginia as a Physician Assistant
  • Primary care experience as a Physician Assistant with strong gynecology skills
  • Prescriptive authority or candidacy to obtain prescriptive authority
  • References from Physician Assistant program and collaborating physicians
  • Experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College health experience
  • Strong organizational, communication, writing and computer skills
