Unit OverviewAcute Care Surgical Services is a nationally recognized AACN Silver Beacon 28‑bed inpatient unit and Center of Bariatric Excellence providing care for Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Microsurgery, Bariatric Surgery, Colo‑Rectal Surgery, and Urology patients. This diverse unit includes general and progressive level of care beds and provides the highest quality care for a broad spectrum of surgical diseases, including the most critically ill and injured patients.
VCU Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the region verified by the State of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons for Adult, Pediatric, and Burn trauma. Nurse Levels
Clinical Nurse I – Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. Provides prevention, maintenance of wellness, and comfort; gives direction, education, and begins acquiring leadership skills at the unit level; delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care; safely administers medications, identifying incompatibilities.
Clinical Nurse II – Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills applied to a specific patient population. Assists with prevention, wellness, and comfort; recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately; mobilizes resources; provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level; safely administers medications.
Clinical Nurse III – Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population. Assists with prevention, wellness, and comfort; anticipates changes and intervenes appropriately; provides direction, education, and serves as a role model; safely administers medications.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements (For Hire)Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state.
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
- Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12–24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice. - Clin II, Clin III:
Academic Health Care Experience;
Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice.
Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
Education/Training PreferredClin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
Clin III:
Certification in specialty area.
Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders; practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia; follows the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards; follows VCUHS policies and procedures.
