The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at VCU Health is the largest and most advanced in the region and has earned the highest distinction of a Level 4 accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Experienced RNs are encouraged to apply to this expanding unit that prioritizes patient safety and nurse education of this specialized population.
The patients admitted to the EMU seek evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of seizures. The unit collaborates with Epileptologists, specialized Nurse Practitioners and EEG technicians who monitor patients and provide real-time feedback to nurses. Our culture emphasizes collaboration and teamwork to provide patient-centered care.
- The Clinical Nurse I integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs, assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated plan of care.
Safely administers prescribed medications and identifies incompatibilities/interactions. - The Clinical Nurse II demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Assists with prevention, maintenance of wellness, and comfort. Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes; mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs of patients/families. Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Delivers and documents direct, age-specific care and safely administers medications.
- The Clinical Nurse III demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level, anticipates changes in patient situations, and intervenes appropriately. Serves as a role model, provides direction and education. Delivers and documents direct, age-specific care and safely administers medications.
- Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state (for hire).
- Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
- Clin I: N/A
- Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
- Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
- Clin I:
Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice - Clin II, Clin III:
Academic health care experience; experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice
- Required:
Diploma or Associate Degree from a professional nursing program recognized/approved by the state's Board of Nursing. All RNs without a BSN must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years and complete within five years unless grandfathered. - Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher). Clin III:
Certification in a specialty area.
- Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
- Practices within Virginia nursing regulations and the ANA Code of Ethics; aligns with VCU Health System policies and procedures.
- Clin I, Clin II, Clin III:
Organizes work and delegates/supervises others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.).
Position Requirements
- Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Shift rotations and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.
As appropriate based on unit assignment.
Physical/Mental/Sensory/Emotional Requirements- Physical:
Lifting 20-50 lbs. Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances. Prolonged standing/sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching. - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking. - Emotional:
Fast-paced environment, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
