Overview

The Neuroscience ICU Unit is state‑of‑the‑art and the largest in the state of Virginia, equipped with 28 beds dedicated to providing outstanding neurocritical care for a variety of diseases involving the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and nerves). The NSICU is an essential component of VCU’s comprehensive stroke center and is the first and only comprehensive stroke center in Virginia. The NSICU has received the Beacon Award for critical care excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses in 2010 and forward.

Positions and Responsibilities

Clinical Nurse I (RN)

  • Integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  • Assist the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Provide direction, education, and begin to acquire leadership skills at the unit level.
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse II (RN)

  • Demonstrate mastery of clinical skills and begin to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population.
  • Assist the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Recognize changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately.
  • Mobilize resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families.
  • Provide direction, education, and assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse III (RN)

  • Demonstrate clinical knowledge at the unit level and begin to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population.
  • Assist the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately.
  • Provide direction, education, and serve as a role model in a clinical setting.
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements
  • For Hire: Clinical I, II, III – Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
  • Continued Employment: Clinical I, II, III – Current RN licensure in Virginia, AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Experience Requirements
  • Clinical I – N/A.
  • Clinical II – 12 to 24 months RN experience.
  • Clinical III – 3 years of clinical experience.
Preferred Experience
  • Clinical I – Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in either an acute care setting or relevant area of practice.
  • Clinical II, III – Academic health‑care experience or experience with similar patient population in an acute care setting or relevant area of practice.
Education and Training Requirements
  • Clinical I, II, III – Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the state Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered.
Preferred Education and Training
  • Clinical I, II, III – Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
  • Clinical III – Certification in specialty area.
Independent Actions and Practice Boundaries
  • Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
  • Practice within the boundaries of Virginia nursing regulations.
