Job Description

This opportunity: WSP is searching for a Temporary On Call Archaeology Field Technician for projects in the Williamsburg, Virginia area during the 2026 winter/spring season. The role works with environmental and heritage resource specialists to support fieldwork, data collection, and reporting.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with supervised archaeological testing (Phase I & II): pedestrian reconnaissance, shovel tests, and test unit excavation.
  • Document findings with detailed note-taking, Munsell soil descriptions, and complete field forms.
  • Collect and log prehistoric and historic artifacts.
  • Work as part of a team and support the collection and preparation of digital data for reporting.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate coursework in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or related field.
  • Archaeological field school experience or a 3‑month professional field experience or certification program.
  • 0‑2 years of experience performing cultural resource services in a field, office or laboratory setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Self‑motivated, physically able to conduct fieldwork in all weather conditions and follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform Phase I survey and carry up to 25 lbs of personal gear and equipment.
  • Experience identifying and analyzing a wide variety of archaeological materials from prehistoric & historic sites.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.A./B.S. degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field.
  • 0‑2 years of previous field work experience in the eastern U.S.
  • Willingness to travel to remote project sites with overnight stay.
  • Reliable transportation and reimbursement for travel per company policy.
  • Experience washing and labeling artifact collections.
Compensation

Expected Salary: $23.66–29.62 k per hour; hourly, project‑based; compensation commensurate with credentials and experience.
