Apex Companies is looking for an
Environmental Scientist to join our team in Midlothian, VA. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career environmental professional looking to build hands‑on field experience while learning from an experienced team.
This position will support a variety of environmental projects throughout Virginia, with a strong focus on Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, environmental sampling, reporting, and other environmental services. The role is expected to 50% or more field-based, with up to 50% travel depending on project needs. Some weeks may involve field work every day. This would include travel to locations out of town.
Your Responsibilities
- Conduct environmental field work and collect soil, water, air, and/or building material samples.
- Support Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
- Assist with asbestos surveys and monitoring and industrial hygiene-related work.
- Provide support for natural resource projects, including wetlands and threatened and endangered species surveys.
- Assist with erosion and sediment control activities as needed.
- Utilize GIS for environmental and natural resource projects.
- Gather, analyze, and interpret environmental data.
- Assist with report preparation, including inputting and organizing data within report templates.
- Assist with editing and preparing environmental reports.
Respond to environmental emergencies and participate in an on-call rotation as needed. - Travel to project sites throughout Virginia, including occasional overnight travel and extended day trips.
- Follow all company and project-specific health and safety procedures.
- Actively develop your technical skills and career through hands‑on project experience and mentorship.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.
- Experience in environmental field sampling, data collection, or a related environmental discipline.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Strong safety awareness and understanding of safe work practices.
- Experience with data management and report preparation.
- Ability to edit Phase I and Phase II ESAs is preferred.
- Familiarity with wetlands, threatened and endangered species, natural resources, or GIS is a plus.
- Light construction experience or hands‑on field skills are a plus.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
- A valid driver's license, good driving history, and reliable transportation are required.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%, including drives of approximately two hours to project sites and overnight travel.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is preferred, but not required.
