Position: Campus Police Officer (Full-Time)

Position Overview

Campus Police Officer (Full-Time) – Virginia Western Community College, part of the Virginia Community College System. This law‑enforcement position protects persons and property on campus and surrounding streets and to uphold the safe and secure learning environment.

Work Schedule

Rotating 12‑hour shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

The Campus Police Officer provides professional, courteous response services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily foot and vehicle patrols of campus property.
  • Enforce college policies and state law, securing all buildings as required.
  • Provide information, directions, and assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Promote compliance with college parking and traffic regulations and control traffic as needed.
  • Conduct investigations of vehicular accidents, thefts, and other incidents.
  • Transport funds to and from area banks.
  • Check campus conditions during inclement weather and report findings.
  • Assist the agency or state government during emergency declarations and other state‑wide duties.
Qualifications & Requirements

The applicant must:

  • Hold an unexpired Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer certification and valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Maintain certification and provide evidence of certification at application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of public safety and security laws, legal codes, regulations, and equipment.
  • Have experience giving oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Show ability to write, proofread, and edit written reports.
  • React appropriately in emergency situations and work all shifts, carrying equipment and performing foot and vehicle patrols.
  • Be able to work a flexible 12‑hour schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.

Additional considerations: operates a state vehicle; does not supervise employees; no required travel beyond campus grounds.

Full‑time law‑enforcement officers are mandatorily enrolled in the Virginia LORS retirement plan. As a Virginia state government employee, many benefits are offered at low or no cost, including basic life insurance, the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program, and up to 6 tuition‑free credit hours per semester for courses administered by Virginia Western Community College, subject to promissory note terms.

Background & Security

Selected candidates must successfully pass comprehensive background investigations, including credit, educational, employment, reference checks, fingerprint and criminal history inquiries, DMV record checks, and physical and drug testing. The applicant will carry a firearm and must not have a felony or misdemeanor domestic‑violence conviction. All previous law‑enforcement positions must have ended with honorable standing. Documents verifying identity and authorization to work in the U.S. must be presented upon employment.
