Duties & ResponsibilitiesUnder the general supervision of the Staff Mechanical Engineer, the Senior Electrical Technician performs advanced journey-level electrical work, serving as a technical lead in the maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of VCU's electrical systems. This role ensures all electrical work, from low-voltage campus lighting to high-voltage power distribution, is performed safely and in compliance with all codes.
The Senior Facilities Electrical Technician is responsible for the expert operation, maintenance, and technical troubleshooting of critical power infrastructure and specialized electrical control systems across the university's facilities. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of electrical power distribution, regulatory compliance, and advanced diagnostic techniques to ensure safe and reliable building operations.
Additional responsibilities include:- Review, Approve, Train, Explain: a broad array of both low voltage and distribution level voltage components, systems, and standards to ensure system integrity, compliance with State regulatory standards, building codes and VCU design standards.
- Subject Matter Expert: Learn the institution and gather manuals and files to establish yourself as the SME for lighting controls, PME electrical monitoring system, solar arrays, switch gear logic, ATS setpoints, and other systems, as assigned.
- Support: Facilities Operations and other customers at VCU with troubleshooting of low and high voltage problems such as VSD trips, breakers, transfer switch failures, lighting controls, and renovations.
- Learn: Stay current on codes, standards, and safety protocols. Note changes that impact the university and alert the staff. Primary focus are NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.
- Maintain professional certifications and attend training, as required, to remain knowledge obtained on the job.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise in three-phase and single-phase power systems and distribution.
- Proficiency in interpreting electrical schematics and using electrical test equipment (volts, amps, kWh).
- Thorough understanding of electrical safety protocols and preventative maintenance (PM) program development.
- Current Licensed Master Electrician.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant technical certifications, such as NICET training.
- Experience with advanced electrical controls and networking.
$90,000 - $100,000
