Job Overview

The Campus Wellness & Fitness Center Manager reports to the Dean of Retention and Student Success and is responsible for the daily operations of campus wellness initiatives and the fitness center. The role also supports the Director of Athletics for fitness facilities at the Hampton Campus, promoting holistic student well‑being through the development and implementation of wellness programs, events, and supportive resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day‑to‑day operations of the campus fitness center, including scheduling, maintenance, and inventory of equipment.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate campus wellness programs and events that encourage healthy living across a diverse, multigenerational community.
  • Assist with oversight of sensory and lactation spaces and other wellness resources.
  • Purchase supplies and manage equipment inventories.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Athletics to support fitness facilities on the Hampton Campus.
  • Serve as a health and wellness liaison within the Student Life and Leadership division.
  • Participate in emergency response and state government activities when required.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of health standards, safety protocols, and wellness principles.
  • Familiarity with health‑related regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong grasp of wellness and health promotion strategies, including current industry trends.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and program evaluation methods.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • High level of organizational and planning skills.
  • Creativity in designing and implementing innovative wellness programs.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Experience managing staff and overseeing operations.
  • Experience working with the public in stressful situations.
  • Event planning, evaluation, and analysis experience.
  • Proficiency with office software applications.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
  • Public speaking, training facilitation, and wellness education experience.
  • Budgeting experience.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, stoop, climb, and reach up to 50 pounds; dynamic movement across a multi‑floor facility.
  • Flexible to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work at all campus locations.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Certified personal trainer or group fitness instructor.
  • Professional certifications in wellness, health promotion, or related disciplines (e.g., NASM).
