Basic FunctionKern Community College District accepts applications for part-time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis. This allows the division to contact qualified applicants immediately if a need arises, without waiting for a new advertisement. Applications remain active for up to two years and will be reviewed when there is a vacancy.
The district is seeking part-time, hourly adjunct instructors for an introductory American Sign Language (ASL) course. The starting salary is $60.00/hour, which may vary based on assignment type and the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula. Refer to the CCA collective bargaining agreement or college HR for more details.
Representative DutiesThis course introduces ASL, focusing on developing basic conversation skills, ASL culture, and history.
Responsibilities include:
- Identifying and demonstrating finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginner level.
- Describing and demonstrating ASL classifiers, grammar, facial expressions, and body movements.
- Translating English to ASL Gloss.
- Explaining cultural aspects of the Deaf community.
- Understanding the history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.
Teaching may occur at various campus sites, including day, evening, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning, and using multiple methodologies.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree and 2 years of related professional experience
OR
Associate degree and 6 years of related professional experience.
Candidates with equivalent qualifications must submit an Application for Equivalence and supporting documents. Degrees from outside the U.S. must be evaluated by a recognized credential evaluation service.
Applicants must demonstrate sensitivity and understanding of diverse backgrounds of community college students.
Note:
Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions. Foreign degrees require evaluation.
Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview, as screening is conducted by a committee.
