SR Principal / Principal Scientist, In Vitro Translational Rheumatology at Boehringer Ingelheim
OverviewA key scientific leader within the Immunology and Respiratory Translational Biology Group, the Principal/Sr. Principal Scientist is responsible for establishing the scientific know‑how and experimental approach in rheumatology to support the positioning of discovery molecules within this disease space.
Responsibilities- Lead and guide positioning of molecules in Rheumatology by generating a scientific translational data package to support disease selection; serve as the rheumatology disease‑area expert in research.
- Independently propose, design, and perform scientific experiments with a predefined goal, including developing new methodologies, protocols, and test procedures that contribute to core group/research goals.
- Direct and oversee experimental design and results of technicians and junior‑level scientists.
- Assume leadership for project teams and/or act as a translational biology representative on multiple teams, contributing to overall program goals.
- Prepare clear technical reports, publications, and oral presentations; communicate results independently and deliver updates to senior‑level management.
- Build strong connections with external key opinion leaders in rheumatology, incorporate feedback and scientific insights into projects, and remain abreast of scientific literature.
- Work collaboratively within the department and across the Innovation Unit, including with Experimental Medicine colleagues and Medicine.
- Assume responsibility for direct reports as needed: recruiting, managing, mentoring, and developing scientific staff.
- Comply with all applicable regulations; ensure that work performed in the area of responsibility is conducted safely and compliantly and that records are maintained in accordance with SOPs and policies.
- Contribute to departmental administration; demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel.
- A demonstrated track record of independent research and peer‑reviewed publications in immunology; comprehensive knowledge of rheumatologic diseases, including T‑cell, B‑cell biology, and the tissue microenvironment.
- Strong understanding of immunology with robust in‑vitro experimental skills; prior hands‑on experience developing novel in‑vitro complex cellular models to assess the effects of novel therapeutic concepts.
- Expertise in establishing rheumatologic‑relevant culture systems (a plus).
- Strong problem‑solving skills and sound judgment to accelerate strategic and project decision‑making.
- Team player with strong verbal, presentation, and written communication skills; ability to propose, articulate, evaluate, and defend scientific ideas and data.
- Ability to mentor, develop, and lead a group of scientists to deliver high‑quality data that contributes to overall program goals; be accountable for the effective performance of the individuals.
- Ability to prioritize responsibility and handle changing direction and/or priorities.
- Appropriate level of understanding of applicable regulations.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Ph.D. or equivalent: for Principal Scientist, 5+ years related experience; for Sr. Principal Scientist, 7+ years of experience including lab management.
