Job Summary
The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, selects actions to reduce tax burden and compliance cost, and serves as the primary contact for complex tax issues. The Manager applies tax knowledge to anticipate risks, communicates policy changes, and participates in marketing, networking, and business development within a specialized area.
Job Duties- Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients meet all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure team compliance with firm policies.
- Conduct top‑level reviews of tax and resolve all tax issues with client; involve specialists when appropriate.
- Communicate client and assurance issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plan and review tax processes and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process, billing, and collection of accounts receivable.
- Manage client relationships and expectations.
- Provide timely advice to clients.
- Research
- Identify research needs, frame issues, and report analysis clearly and concisely.
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of written tax advice and tax returns.
- Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Apply firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740, FAS 109, and FIN 48.
- Explain and discuss income tax provision components and uncertain tax positions to clients.
- Communicate with assurance counterparts for timely tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
- Utilize and manage STS as needed.
- Tax Consulting
- Develop, recommend, and implement methods to maximize client benefits by reducing current and future taxes.
- Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
- Develop and implement a work plan to organize STS assistance on ongoing projects.
- Serve as a technical resource and ensure client service teams comply with firm policy regarding written tax advice.
- Provide effective assistance with exam support and frame projects for delegation to seniors and associates.
- Tax Specialization
- Develop deep understanding of technical and practical issues in selected areas of taxation such as corporate, state, international, incentives, etc.
- Possibly organize internal CPE training sessions in the area of specialization.
- Strategy Development
- Introduce and develop ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
- Review studies of tax implications and offer alternative courses of action.
- Leverage lessons learned to improve processes and methods.
- Other Duties as required.
- Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
- Train associates and seniors on all current software tools.
- Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Skills and Abilities
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Experience
- Five (5) or more years of relevant tax or public accounting experience required.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- License/Certifications
- CPA, Attorney (admitted in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required.
- Other professional degrees or certifications preferred.
- Software
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
- Language N/A.

Individual salaries are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
California Range: $112,000 - $150,000
Colorado Range: $104,500 - $115,500
Illinois Range: $105,000 - $130,000
Maryland Range: $113,000 - $120,000
Massachusetts Range: $120,000 - $127,000
Minnesota Range: $90,000 - $120,000
New Jersey Range: $115,000 - $140,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $125,000 - $160,000
Washington Range: $107,400 - $126,900
Washington DC Range: $120,000 - $140,000
