Position: CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Rifle Correctional Facility

Overview

The Rifle Correctional Center is a 192-bed Level I minimum security facility, located on a 75-acre site in rural Garfield County in Western Colorado. The facility began in the 1960s as a satellite labor camp and has evolved to include secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program to reduce recidivism. This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at the Rifle location.

Department information, transfer opportunities, and related administrative regulations are provided to help applicants prepare for the evaluation process.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
  • Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required);
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
  • Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
  • Monitor visiting areas;
  • Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
  • Cross check and maintain movement logs;
  • Conduct searches for contraband (may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
  • Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;
  • Inspect inmate mail and property;
  • Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols;
  • Follow tool and key control procedures, ensure proper storage and documentation;
  • Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices;
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors;
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or a GED certificate;
  • Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify; sponsorship for non-residents is not provided;
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license;
  • No felony convictions as described in eligibility criteria and related regulations;
  • Successful completion of a background investigation; disposition of charges may be required in writing;
  • All job offers contingent upon a health screening certifying ability to perform essential functions;
  • Successfully pass all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics assessments;
  • Physical ability to perform Defensive Tactics and related activities (listed abilities);
  • Willingness to work all shifts, weekends and holidays; ability to report during inclement weather;
  • Willingness and ability to use physical force as trained, including firearms and security devices;
  • Willingness to work in a locked facility or environment with variable conditions;
  • TB screening required for all new employees;
