The Rifle Correctional Center is a 192-bed Level I minimum security facility located on a 75-acre site in rural Garfield County in Western Colorado. The facility opened in the 1960s as a satellite labor camp and has evolved to its current format. Programming includes secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program to reduce recidivism. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process job announcement.

Description Of Job / ResponsibilitiesThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities and supports the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values, including inmate preparation for community reentry. Officers communicate respectfully with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors and the public, and work as a cohesive team to manage a diverse inmate population.
Key duties include, but are not limited to:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification)
- Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians/vehicles
- Operate doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
- Maintain movement logs and conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells for health, safety and sanitation
- Inspect inmate mail and property
- Respond to emergencies and follow safety protocols
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of 24/7 facilities.
