Overview
This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Rifle location. The Rifle Correctional Center is a 192-bed Level I minimum security facility located on a 75-acre site in rural Garfield County in Western Colorado. The facility has evolved to include secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program intended to reduce recidivism. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process job announcement.
Applicants are encouraged to review the Administrative Regulations (AR) 100s and 300s series on the department policies page to prepare for the comparative analysis process.

ResponsibilitiesThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities and supports the CDOC Mission, Vision, and Values. Officers communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers, and the public, and work as part of a cohesive team while managing a diverse inmate population. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required)
- Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
- Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment, and alarms
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts
- Cross check and maintain movement logs
- Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells for health, safety, and sanitation standards
- Inspect inmate mail and property
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) and follow safety protocols
- Manage tool and key control, storage, and documentation
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain facility safety and security (24/7 operations).
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED
- Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify and does not sponsor non-residents
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license
- Disclosures regarding prior state employment termination or resignation; extraordinary circumstances may apply
- No felony convictions as defined by CDOC policy and applicable law; background review required
- Successful completion of a background investigation; provide disposition of charges if applicable
- All offers contingent upon health screening confirming ability to perform essential functions
- Pass Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training modules, including English proficiency, competency assessments, and Defensive Tactics exams
- Ability to complete Defensive Tactics and to be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during training
- Willing and able to work all shifts, weekends, holidays, and inclement weather; shift schedules released after Basic Training
- Willing and able to use physical force, including firearms, and to work in a locked facility with variable conditions
- Willing to travel and transport inmates in state vehicles
- TB screening required for all new employees
