Position Summary

Patient care protocols are delineated by the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Emergency Medical Service Board. Ensures adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures. Patient care assignment may include:
Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric Age Groups.

Detailed Responsibilities
  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 – Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
  • ORIENTATION – Assist in orienting new employees as required
  • EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES – Monitor and stock supply areas; maintain equipment as appropriate
  • MEETINGS – Attend education sessions, department and other meetings as appropriate
  • RELATED WORK – Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 – Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 – Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • PATIENT CARE – Perform patient care assignments; triage emergency care; stabilize and/or prepare patient for transport; document all patient care activities
  • ALS – Provide advanced life support to include oral/nasal endotracheal intubation, needle thoracostomy, needle/surgical cricothyroidotomy, intramuscular catheter insertion, pericardiocentesis; perform 12-lead EKGs and chemical blood glucose tests
  • PATIENT CARE – Perform peripheral venous puncture, blood draws, and IV fluid therapy and drug administration
  • CARDIAC – Provide cardiac monitoring; initiate or assist with cardioversion or defibrillation
  • PATIENT CARE – Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, topical application or sublingual administration of medications; provide for nebulized drug administration
  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 – Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 – Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
  • CUSTOMER RELATIONS – Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and hospital employees
  • QUALITY – Participate in department quality programs
Qualifications Education
  • High School or GED Equivalent (Essential)
Experience
  • No minimum experience required (Nonessential)
Credentials
  • CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuer (Essential)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (Essential)
  • Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic License (Essential)
  • Nationally Registered Paramedic License (Nonessential)
  • Basic Arrhythmia Certificate within 1 year (Nonessential)
Physical Conditions

Heavy Work:
Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical demand requirements exceed those for medium work.

Working Conditions
  • Significant Hazard:
    Chemicals, Biohazardous materials require PPE
  • Tuberculosis testing completed upon hire and as required
